Role Description Under direction, the 6120 Consumer Protection Environmental Health Inspector conducts inspections of housing, industrial plants, solid waste facilities, vehicles, noise sources, food establishments, and public health hazards to enforce laws, recommend remedies, issue citations, prepare reports, administer programs, and perform related duties as needed.

Essential Duties

Enforce provisions of health, housing, planning, air pollution, and related codes; may specialize as required.

Investigate complaints, coordinate with city departments (e.g., building, electrical, plumbing, fire, police), appear as witness in court, and testify in cases involving food establishments and housing.

Conduct inspections of dwellings, hotels, apartments, businesses, and multiple dwellings; check sanitation, maintenance, lighting, ventilation, occupancy, and compliance; coordinate corrections; prepare condemnation reports and testify at hearings.

Inspect noise sources, prepare legal notices, recommend corrective action, and prepare cases for the Variance Board.

Inspect food and drink establishments, detect violations, order corrections, advise operators, obtain samples for laboratory analysis, conduct foodborne illness investigations, and prepare related notices and correspondence.

Conduct miscellaneous inspections (e.g., laundry facilities, homes for the aged, animal boarding, refuse removal disputes, pesticide issues, swimming pool construction, backflow prevention).

Perform other special duties as required, including surveys of hazardous materials, water sampling, recreational water facilities, and participation in meetings and conferences.

How To Qualify Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Possession of a REHS (Registered Environmental Health Specialist) Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Public Health Services.

Valid California Driver's License (or ability to obtain one).
