Associate/Scientist, Protein-Biologic Discovery About Oxford BioTherapeutics

Oxford BioTherapeutics (OBT) is a dynamic, rapidly‑growing, international biotechnology company based in Oxford, UK, and San Jose, CA. We are a clinical‑stage oncology company with a pipeline of immuno‑oncology and antibody‑drug conjugate–based therapies. OBT’s Immuno‑Oncology discovery process provides unique insight into the cancer‑immune cell synapse and has identified several novel IO candidates for cancer therapy. Our proprietary Oxford Genome Anatomy Project (OGAP®) database is used to discover novel tumor antigens and immune‑cell surface proteins. OBT currently has one ADC in Phase 1b clinical trials in collaboration with Menarini and target discovery collaborations with Boehringer Ingelheim, Zymeworks, and Roche.

Purpose of this role

OBT seeks an experienced, creative, and motivated scientist to contribute to our Discovery Biologics Protein Science group. The candidate will work independently and in matrixed teams to lead the development of antigen‑specific antibodies against novel targets discovered by OBT. Responsibilities include production of recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, multispecific scaffolds, and novel protein modalities to support early discovery and validation research.

Roles & Responsibilities

Contribute to discovery and development of antibody therapeutics for oncology and immune‑oncology for novel targets.

Support recombinant protein and bi‑ and multispecific antibody discovery plans (immunogen design, assay development, screening, and functional characterization).

Support biological discovery through multiple protein and antibody discovery platforms.

Manage target projects to execute protein production and antibody discovery/optimization across various platforms.

Generate target‑overexpressing cell lines for antibody discovery work.

Develop strategies to express, purify, and analyze proteins for novel tumor targets expressed in mammalian cells.

Perform purification using AKTA/HPLC systems and maintain equipment.

Conduct antibody characterization (binding affinity and kinetics via Octet/Biacore, epitope binning/mapping, functional assays).

Troubleshoot experimental issues, contribute to process and assay transfers.

Mentor lower‑level colleagues and assist in scientific optimization & development.

Analyze data, interpret results, identify problems, and develop troubleshooting plans.

Maintain accurate documentation and adhere to laboratory safety procedures.

Represent the protein science function at project team meetings.

Ensure compliance with data management, laboratory notebook policy, and laboratory safety.

Requirements

Ph.D. in biological sciences or related field with 4+ years post‑Ph.D., or MS with 6+ years, or BS with 8+ years of experience in the biopharma industry or closely related discipline, preferably in a fast‑paced startup environment.

Experience in molecular biology and/or biochemistry, including gene manipulation, subcloning, expression vector modifications, and protein expression in HEK & CHO cell systems.

Experience developing and optimizing recombinant proteins and bi‑ and multispecific antibody formats across multiple parameters.

Extensive experience in protein and antibody purification techniques (affinity chromatography, ion‑exchange chromatography, size‑exclusion chromatography) and proficiency in operating and troubleshooting modern chromatography hardware and software (Cytiva AKTA systems, Agilent HPLC/UPLC).

Preferred

Antibody drug discovery experience for immune‑oncology in biopharmaceutical industry.

Ability to independently manage projects and deliver results on stringent timelines with high quality.
