Job Summary The Utility Lead Systems Operator is responsible for safely operating, monitoring, adjusting, training and maintaining a variety of utility systems, including high pressure steam boilers, ammonia refrigeration, well water, potable water, hot water, fire suppression, pneumatic, and HVAC equipment. This role requires training other utility team members through hands‑on experience of the mechanical and electrical systems the utilities department is responsible for as well as the ability to perform routine and emergency repairs, preventative maintenance, and system inspections. The utility lead operator must be proactive, self‑directed, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Operate steam boilers and associated equipment

Operate ammonia refrigeration system and associated equipment

Operate hot water heating systems

Operate water distribution systems

Operate plant and water filtration systems

Operated air compressor systems

Monitor HVAC, fire suppression and make up air units

Perform daily equipment rounds, inspections and water testing

Perform assigned preventative maintenance tasks

Troubleshoot and address equipment failures

Perform general housekeeping and other assigned tasks as needed

Ability to train, mentor, and lead other hourly utility operators

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Must be 18 years of age or older

Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship

Six-months proven ammonia refrigeration or high-pressure steam system experience

General mechanical or electrical maintenance experience

Read, write, and orally communicate in English and ability to work with no or little supervision

Flexibility to work overtime, nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled

Preferred Qualifications

Ammonia refrigeration or steam system Certifications or licenses

Familiarity with PSM / RMP standards

One-year proven experience in an industrial ammonia refrigeration or high-pressure steam environment

One-year proven experience in general or advanced Maintenance

Familiarity with water treatment systems, steam auxiliary equipment, air compressors, air conveyance equipment, pumps, fire suppression, HVAC systems

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability and willingness to learn and advance in an industrial ammonia refrigeration environment

Ability and willingness to learn and advance in an industrial high-pressure steam environment

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems

Ability to perform preventative, routine and emergency maintenance and repairs

Proficiency in communicating and collaborating with cross-functional teams

Competency in taking and logging system readings to ensure proper functionality

Self-directed with a strong ability to work independently

Detail-orientated with a commitment to maintaining safety and compliance standards

Proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential issues

Summary America’s Heartland Packing is set to open its doors in early 2025. The 775,000 sq. ft. greenfield project will include a harvest floor, carcass chillers, fabrication area, rendering, further processing area, storage coolers, freezers, and loading docks.
