Overview The Medical Intermediate and Intensive Care Unit is a progressively opening unit with flexible patient acuity ranging from Acute to Intensive Care. This unit proudly provides quality care to Internal Medicine patients of a variety of medical diagnosis including renal, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, hepatology, infectious disease, endocrine, and gerontology. The team building this unit has been recognized by AACN as a Beacon Gold Unit for Excellence. This achievement was obtained through a focus in collaborative practice, a commitment to maintaining a highly satisfied work force, and a healthy work environment which supports both novice and expert clinicians.

Unit Characteristics

28 bed hybrid unit with progressive and intensive care beds focused on caring for a wide variety of adult medical patients across the full spectrum of their hospital admission

Primary admission diagnoses include respiratory failure, sepsis, multisystem organ failure, GI bleeds, DKA, and significant compromise of kidney and liver failure

Patient Care Philosophy

Practice evidence-based care for patients with complex medical and surgical diagnoses

Serve patients through the continuum of care

Provide 24-hour accessibility to hospitalists and teaching physician services

Offer access to multiple Watson rooms, a unique space for team members to practice mindfulness

Job Summary The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records.

Responsibilities

Able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision.

Self-directed in the accomplishment of routine activities.

Report violations of VCUHS policy or procedure that involve conflicts of a sensitive nature or that would be considered unusual in nature promptly to the Nurse Manager (or designee).

Handle, transport, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional Position Requirements

Unit Secretaries work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.

Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with a specific Nurse Manager.

Schedules including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or the best interest of the work unit.

Physical Requirements

Lifting up to 50 lbs.

Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), repetitive motion.

Previous experience setting up and maintaining office system (organizational skills)

Previous experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology

Education/training PREFERRED

Completion of a Medical Terminology course
