City Mortuary Technician – NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Temporary 18‑month position. Assists with autopsy preparation, body transport, documentation, and mortuary maintenance. Responsibilities
Assist in preparing deceased for autopsy: remove clothing, weigh, lift body, remove skull cap, and support Medical Examiners. After autopsy: replace organs, pack cavities, suture, wash, shroud, place body in storage box, and clean/disinfect autopsy table. At scene of death: prepare body for transport, attach toe tags, secure medications, place body in body bag. Accompany drivers to collect decedents and transport back to the Mortuary. Report accidents and unusual incidents to management. Check death certificates and related documents for release of claimed bodies. Record receipt, storage, transfer, and release of bodies and clothing, and all autopsy records. Assist in loading/unloading bodies from City, EMS and funeral director hearses. Maintain premises, equipment, and instruments in a clean and sanitary condition. Take identification head‑shot photographs. Box and load City burial cases. Log deceased case information. Clean and disinfect body transport vehicle, equipment, autopsy rooms and other associated locations. Take fingerprints of decedents during or after autopsy as per procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Minimum: No formal education or experience required. Preferred:
- Experience with computers, smartphones, and data entry. - Experience in a mortuary, funeral home, or decedent transportation. - Valid New York State driver’s license. - Ability to provide a DNA sample by swabbing. - Willingness to work 24‑hour shift coverage during all weather and emergency events (essential position). Residency Requirement
New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment. Certain employees with two continuous years in the City may qualify for residence in select surrounding counties. Compensation
