Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance

at Rock Creek Regional Park.

The Rock Creek Management Area is comprised of 28 parks, including Laytonia Recreational Park, Rock Creek Regional Park, 2 Lakes, a Boating Rental and a Boating Landing Ramp Facilities, an Archery, a large Conservation Park, local, special and neighborhood parks, 25 shelters, 12 basketball and 12 tennis courts, a Nature Center, a Park Activity Building, four stream valley parks, and a combination of over 31 miles of natural and hard surface trails and 13 athletic fields. Under the supervision of a Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader, this role performs park and maintenance work involving considerable responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will support various park maintenance programs and perform a variety of general park maintenance tasks such as equipment operation, routine ground maintenance, playground repairs, trash removal, local athletic field renovation and maintenance, trail maintenance, tree planting, pruning, and after‑care by working with other team members.

The ideal candidate should possess skills to operate light automotive and motorized power equipment; trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, forklifts, and apply chemical pesticides. Position requires working days, nights, and weekends.

Important Skills and Characteristics:

Knowledge of work procedures, steps and standard tasks and techniques for routine grounds maintenance and trails maintenance; landscaping; basic building maintenance and custodial work processes; safety procedures; cleaning agents, procedures, and equipment; pesticides and fertilizers and their applications; and Commission organization, policies and procedures*.

Skill and ability to operate hand and power tools, chainsaws, power saws, woodchippers, push and riding mowers, small tractors with attachments, small trucks or vans with small trailers; operate various computerized software programs; provide courteous service; and perform First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).

Skill in problem solving to select, organize and logically process relevant information (verbal, numerical or abstract) to solve a problem.

Skill in communication to understand verbal and written information (including facts, descriptions and ideas) and to express such information so that others will understand.

Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of a team.

Responsibilities:

Operate riding mowers and tractors with attachments on parks, ballfields, and brush.

Operate trucks, non‑CDL truck and trailer combinations, non‑CDL trash trucks, front‑end loader, backhoe, skid steer, non‑CDL dump trucks with snowplows and heavy equipment for snow removal, grading fields and other park areas.

Haul materials and equipment.

Perform routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Occasionally perform routine custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.

Maintain athletic fields including layout, aeration, overseeding, and fertilization of turf areas.

Install amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fences, basketball rims and nets.

Perform tree maintenance duties, operate chainsaws, chipping machines, stump grinder and other equipment.

Assist with transporting supplies and setting up special events.

Provide general assistance to park visitors and assist with programs and events.

Communicate in another language is a plus.

Perform stormwater facilities preventive maintenance according to the Department of Environment Protection standards.

Maintain bioretention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation free of weeds.

Working Conditions:

Incumbent primarily works outside with a combination of office work occasionally or as assigned.

Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps).

Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.

An essential employee required to be on‑call 24 hours for any emergencies.

Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary.

Qualifications:

Pass Commission medical examination.

18 years of age.

Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance, semi‑skilled trade work (HVACR, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, carpentry). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total two (2) years.

Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
