What You’ll Do As A Motor Vehicle Inspector
Inspect motor vehicles including motor homes, campers, school buses, church buses, self‑assembled vehicles, and salvage vehicles to determine whether they are unsafe or improperly equipped, or that equipment is in proper adjustment or repair as required by law by entering and exiting vehicles and bends, stoops and utilizing mechanics’ “creeper” to crawl under vehicle to visually check mechanical components.
Enter and retrieve information using numerous Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) databases.
Complete inspection forms and affix inspection decals to those vehicles which pass.
Operate state‑owned motor vehicle inspection vehicle to transport equipment used in motor vehicle inspection.
Inform the owner and/or operator of repairs or adjustments which are necessary to place the vehicle in safe condition.

Qualifications 6 months training or 6 months experience in automotive maintenance & repair and/or mechanical vehicle inspections;
AND
6 months experience utilizing personal computer and associated business office applications (Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook).
AND
formal education in arithmetic that includes addition and subtraction and in reading, writing and speaking common English vocabulary;
AND
valid driver's license.
- Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
POSITION SPECIFIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid Driver’s license required.

Supplemental Information UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS Works outside exposed to weather, dirt, rust, car fumes, burns from hot engines, fast moving vehicles, highway noise and angry vehicle owners; conducts inspections in confined spaces under automotive vehicles utilizing a creeper.
Background Check Information
A BCI and FBI fingerprint check, a background check, including a polygraph examination, may be required on all selected applicants.
A comparative analysis and/or drug‑test may be a requirement of the hiring process.
