Starting pay range: $18 to $21 per hour, depending on experience.
Overview Provides a variety of medical assistant duties to support patients, medical providers, clinical support staff and other clinic members to facilitate efficient clinic operations.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Greets patients and obtains health history and presenting complaint.
Demonstrates good customer service and interpersonal skills with all patients.
Answers routine patient, eligibility, scope of service and agency inquiries.
Obtains and records patient vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure); performs EKGs, breathing treatments, administers medications, and gives injections as ordered by the provider or by agency policy.
Obtains specimens in accordance with medical orders or established protocols.
Prepares the patient for physical exam and assists the provider during the examination.
Reinforces the provider’s instructions and reviews and logs the medications prescribed.
Answers patient telephone calls, takes messages and provides assistance in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
Documents patient’s clinical information, medications, care plan, and demographic information at each encounter.
Schedules patient referral appointments for managed care services and other programs.
Works with medical administrative assistants and other staff to route patient charts to proper location as appropriate.
Makes sure lab reports, diagnostic reports, specialist consultations and other correspondence is in the patient’s medical record before the patient is placed in the exam room.
Maintains a clean and orderly clinical area.
Maintains immunization, medication, sterilization and refrigerator logs.
Gives routine information in accordance with established procedures.
Follows confidentiality, HIPAA and security procedures.
Duplicates documents and forms as directed.Assists in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings, education programs, conferences, etc.
Performs a variety of routine clinical functions and related work as required or assigned.
Maintains a professional demeanor and effective communications at all times.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of medical assistant procedures and proper medical record documentation.
Knowledge of /skill in English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Knowledge of basic arithmetic to make simple medical dose calculations.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff.
Skill in operating a computer, copier, fax and other related machines.
Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instruction.
Ability to accurately and proficiently perform phlebotomy, dressings, vision/hearing tests and take vital signs.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
Ability to file and maintain patient records, files, reports, and other correspondence.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Completion of an accredited medical assistant training program or three years of progressively responsible experience in a medical office setting.
Word processing, internet and computer experience.
Evidence of current CPR certification or obtain by end of introductory period (company will assist with obtaining certification).
Physical Requirements
Must be able to hear and speak clearly in order to communicate information to patients and staff.
Must be able to have vision adequate to read documents, a computer screen, registration forms and other clinic documents.
Manual dexterity; the ability to lift at least 30 pounds; and the ability to stand for extended periods.
Other Requirements Must provide own vehicle for local travel; some out of state travel may be required.
