Assistant Billing Manager
to lead billing operations for a designated group of practices and attorneys. This role is ideal for an experienced law firm billing professional who enjoys managing teams, navigating complex billing arrangements, and driving accuracy and efficiency in a high-volume environment.
You’ll serve as a key operational leader within the firm’s billing function, working closely with billing partners, finance leadership, and cross‑functional teams to ensure billing processes run smoothly and consistently meet client and firm expectations.
Role Highlights
Salary range: $95,000 – $146,000 , depending on experience and location
Direct people management required , including coaching and performance management
Hands‑on experience conducting performance evaluations is a must
What You’ll Do
Oversee daily law firm billing operations, including invoice preparation, billing edits, and reporting, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Manage and allocate workflow across a team of billing professionals, providing coverage and support during peak billing periods.
Supervise complex billing matters, including alternative fee arrangements and non‑standard client requirements.
Ensure compliance with client billing guidelines, negotiated rates, and e‑billing platform requirements.
Partner closely with collections, accounts payable, conflicts, and e‑billing teams to resolve discrepancies and improve processes.
Act as a primary point of contact for billing partners and attorneys, responding to inquiries and resolving billing issues.
Lead annual performance evaluations, provide ongoing coaching, and identify training needs to support team development.
Monitor billing and e‑billing status reports to ensure deadlines are met and issues are escalated appropriately.
Collaborate with the collections team to resolve unallocated cash and billing issues impacting collections.
Maintain and update client billing instructions and support onboarding of billing staff to new attorneys and teams.
Proactively identify opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce billing cycle times, and enhance efficiency.
What We’re Looking For
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field; equivalent BigLaw firm billing experience may be considered.
Minimum of
5 years of law firm billing experience , including
direct supervision of billing staff .
Demonstrated experience managing teams and conducting formal performance evaluations
(required).
Strong understanding of law firm billing practices, client guidelines, and e‑billing platforms.
Advanced proficiency in Excel and working knowledge of 3E or a comparable financial system.
Detail‑oriented, organized, and comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
Strong communication skills with the ability to interact confidently with attorneys, finance teams, and clients.
