The Kennel Technician (tech) is a crucial member of the animal care team responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for shelter animals. This position expands on the responsibilities of the Kennel Tech I position. The new responsibilities include processing new animals for intake, releasing animals, assisting community members with pet licenses, entering information into the animal reference number Google sheet, taking payments, and giving receipts. Kennel Technicians play a key role in supporting the overall well‑being of the animals in the shelter’s care. They are responsible for any and all animal related care and cleaning. They are directly responsible for the cleanliness of the animal kennels and the shelter as a whole.
Essential Duties
Animal Care and Kennel Cleaning
Cleaning, animal feeding, basic medications, laundry, dishes, animal shelter logs, etc.
Process Shelter Intakes and Releases
Properly process and document animal intakes into the shelter via the intake log.
Complete the intake checklist for all animals.
Properly complete the release form for each animal.
Payments and Receipts
Process checks, credit card, and cash transactions.
Provide receipts after all transactions.
Pet Licenses
Properly license community cats and dogs.
Enter licenses into the license spreadsheet.
Animal Reference Number Spreadsheet
Document animals into the animal reference number spreadsheet.
Additional Duties
Complete Daily Checklist
Each shelter area is given a daily checklist that covers the routine tasks which need to be completed every day in that area.
It is not a comprehensive checklist.
Enrichment and Interaction
Provide basic enrichment activities to animals.
Offer toys, treats, and short periods of socialization.
Report any changes in behavior or health to Management.
Facility Maintenance
Assist with general facility maintenance tasks as needed.
Report any maintenance issues or repairs required in the kennel area to Management.
Collaborate with other members of the animal care team, including veterinary staff, adoption counselors, and volunteers, to ensure the overall well‑being of shelter animals.
Compliance with Protocols
Adhere to established protocols for animal care, cleanliness, and disease prevention.
Follow safety procedures and guidelines to ensure a secure working environment.
Training and Development
Participate in training sessions to enhance skills in animal care, cleaning procedures, and safety protocols.
Stay informed about best practices in animal sheltering and attend relevant workshops or seminars.
Work Email
Check your work email once in the morning and once in the afternoon to view and respond to any and all relevant or time‑sensitive emails.
Ensure the shelter areas are clean and tidy at all times.
Clean and put away donations as needed.
Clean used transport crates and put them away.
Seasonal outdoor work as needed: snow shoveling and removal, pulling weeds, etc.
Perform related work and support for the city’s Animal Shelter as required and assigned.
Supervision Exercised No supervisory responsibilities.
Independence of Action Work is performed in accordance with legal requirements, standard practices and methods requiring initiative to complete recurring assignments independently and judgment to determine which of many methods are applicable in any given situation.
Communication/Working Relationships Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of the staff and the general public in a positive and cooperative manner.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish effective working relationships with others.
Qualifications Minimum Education: A high school diploma and or an Associate’s degree is preferred but is not required.
Language Skills: Ability to read, write and speak English fluently. Ability to respond to employees, customers, regulatory agencies or authorities, or members of the local business community. Bi‑lingual Spanish speaking skills are preferred.

Compensation The Kennel Technician is a full/part time position and requires a minimum of 19–36 hours a week including possible attendance at public meetings (including evenings). The pay range is $17–21 per hour.
