The Town of Weaverville is seeking applications for a Public Works Maintenance Technician.
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director, or their designee, this position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment and tools, in one or more of the following Public Works Divisions: Streets, Sanitation, Stormwater, Grounds Maintenance, and Water Maintenance/Distribution.
Work is conducted inside and outside and can be subject to extreme weather conditions and exposure to various hazards such as loud noise, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mist, oils, poor ventilation, and working in small spaces such as trenches and vaults. Safety equipment, including personal protective equipment, is provided by the Town.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Hourly rate dependent on education and experience; benefits include Town paid health insurance for employees, retirement benefits through the Local Government Employees Retirement System, up to 6% match for 401(k) contributions, paid leave (sick, holiday, annual vacation leave), paid training, and more. HOURS AND SCHEDULE
Fulltime, hourly, non-exempt position with schedule and hours to be set by the Public Works Director or their designee. Position is subject to call back. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs required labor as part of a crew involved in sanitation services, grounds maintenance, street and sidewalk construction and maintenance projects, pavement cutting, ditch digging, storm sewer line clearing and repair, waterline installation or repair, and backfilling, as assigned or as needed; Performs solid waste collection and removal duties as assigned; performs leaf, yard waste, and bulky item collection and removal duties as assigned; Assists in the maintenance and mowing of the street rights-of-way, Town properties, and storm drainage facilities and systems as assigned; Operates vehicles or trucks of various sizes and weights for the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, as assigned; Cleans and performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs and/or safety issues to supervisor; Performs all duties in conformity with applicable safety and security protocols and standards; Assists other Public Works Divisions as needed; Arrives to work on time and maintains regular job attendance; Operates and drives vehicles and/or equipment safely and legally; Participates in the emergency response schedule to handle emergency situations involving the Public Works Department; Performs other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time in a variety of climate conditions; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions; ability to read and understand equipment and tool instruction manuals and safety specifications; ability to prepare written activity reports and other documents as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
No minimum level of education or experience required for this position ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Position also requires: Background screening, pre-employment and random drug screening Valid North Carolina Driver’s License, or equivalent Ability to read, write and speak the English language PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force constantly to lift and move objects. Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, lifting, handling, manipulating, touching, feeling, grasping, placing, detecting, positioning, feeling, talking, hearing, smelling, and repetitive motions. Must possess visual acuity (including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus) to make visual inspections of work assigned and completed, use measurement devices, operate equipment, perform mechanical and trade tasks, and observe general surroundings and activities.
