Job Description This is a hybrid position. The role functions as a Parks Department Maintenance Technician from April 1 to September 30 each year and then as an Equipment Operator in the Street Department from October 1 to March 31. Full job descriptions can be found on the City’s website.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance Technician
Performs a variety of building construction and maintenance work including carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, welding, and concrete assignments.
May perform specialized assignments or have specific areas of responsibility such as arborist, swimming pool maintenance or irrigation/sprinkler repair and maintenance.
Performs grounds keeping and landscaping work in the City parks, public areas and recreation/sports areas, including mowing, tree trimming, fertilizing, irrigation, pest and weed control and maintains, repairs and installs automated sprinkling/irrigation system.
Designs and updates park sprinklers/maps on AutoCad.
Operates all equipment in the Parks Department inventory including motor vehicles, excavator, loader, backhoe, bucket truck and dump truck.
Operates hand and power tools; maintains, services and repairs equipment and tools.
May direct work activities of seasonal/part‑time employees.
Maintains inspection, maintenance and repair records, documentation and logs; makes purchases with City purchasing card and reconciles purchase orders and billing monthly.
If assigned to irrigation/sprinkler maintenance, designs, installs, maintains and repairs automated irrigation systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Equipment Operator
Operates power tools and light and medium equipment including backhoes, loaders, compactors and dump trucks with trailers; other equipment may include sweeper, camera van, equipment transport vehicles and snow plows.
Performs flagging and traffic control duties at work sites; performs basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Performs maintenance and repair work on City streets, storm drain system and levees; patches holes and seals cracks in asphalt pavement with hot asphalt and crack seal mixture; prepares road surfaces for chip sealing, fog sealing, microsealing and other related maintenance applications.
Maintains levee system by cutting trees and clearing brush, cleaning head gates and clearing debris basins; maintains storm drain systems by clearing lines, spillways, debris grates and debris basins using jet trucks and related equipment.
Transports hot asphalt, chips for chip sealing, and other repair and maintenance materials to repair and stockpile sites; transports debris from repair sites to dump, storage and/or recycling sites.
Performs snow and ice control work on streets by pre‑treating with brine solution; performs snow and ice removal using equipment to plow, sand, de‑ice streets and roadways; removes debris from streets and roadways and transports to dump site; mixes pretreatment (salt brine) solution for application ahead of storms.
Trains to operate all equipment used by the Department.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Licenses and Certifications
High school diploma or GED.
Class A CDL with specified endorsements.
Flagging certification.
CPR and First Aid certification.
Two (2) years of general grounds keeping or building maintenance experience is preferred.
Two (2) years of light and medium equipment experience is preferred.
Physical Requirements Employees must frequently stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials or manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms; operate a motor vehicle or job‑related equipment; climb ladders, work at heights, and work in confined spaces. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
