Job Summary The Assistant City Attorney – Transactional is a member of the City Attorney’s Office, reports to and is under the authority of the City Attorney. General responsibilities include research and drafting of legal opinions, litigation, and legal advice as requested. Due to the wide scope of legal opinions and related work to which attention must be given; there is much need for independent judgment with a high degree of responsibility. Incumbent in this classification may also be assigned as City Prosecutor, which requires extreme independent judgment and ability to prosecute municipal offenses successfully without direct supervision. This position will be assigned to support various City departments as determined by the City Attorney and assist other transactional attorneys when requested.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Researches legal issues as directed by the City Attorney.
Drafts legal opinions for Department Heads and City Commissioners.
Researches and drafts ordinances and resolutions for presentation to the City Commission.
Prosecutes municipal ordinance violations in County Court and handles related appeals.
Provides advice to Planning and Zoning Board, Board of Appeals and Adjustment, Community Redevelopment Advisory Board, and General Employees’ Pension Board.
Prosecutes and defends City's actions before Civil Service Board.
Effectively and positively represents the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
Establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.
Performs related work as required for this position description only.
Requirements Education / Experience Required: Graduation from an accredited law school (LLB or JD Degree) and membership in good standing in the Florida Bar. At least three (3) years of experience with research and drafting of legal opinions; providing legal advice; research and drafting of ordinances and resolutions; drafting and review of contracts; and providing presentations to City boards relating to Sunshine Law. Experience and expertise in a variety of legal matters, including drafting and review/revision of construction contracts, a general familiarity with government procurements, as well as experience with and knowledge of general municipal law is also required. Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Valid Driver’s License: With proof of automobile insurance
