What We're Looking For:
The
Survey Crew Chief
plays a key role in delivering accurate, high-quality survey data that supports a wide range of engineering and infrastructure projects at Barge Design Solutions. This position leads field survey crews in performing boundary, topographic, construction layout, and control surveys while ensuring safety, efficiency, and precision in daily operations. Working closely with project managers, engineers, and clients, the Survey Crew Chief helps translate project requirements into reliable field results and contributes to successful project delivery from the ground up.
Responsibilities
Plan, organize, and direct field survey activities in accordance with project requirements and company standards.
Supervise and train survey field staff in proper surveying methods, safety procedures, and use of equipment.
Perform field surveys using GPS, robotic total stations, levels, and other surveying instruments.
Collect, process, and review field data for completeness, accuracy, and quality control.
Interpret and implement engineering and architectural plans, maps, and specifications for survey projects.
Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and office staff regarding project requirements and progress.
Maintain field notes, sketches, and digital data records in an organized and accurate manner.
Ensure all field work adheres to applicable safety, environmental, and legal standards.
Troubleshoot field and equipment issues and ensure proper maintenance of all surveying instruments.
May perform computations and assist with preparation of survey plats, legal descriptions, and other documentation as needed.
Education & Experience Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 3-5 years of field surveying experience, with at least 1–2 years in a crew chief or lead role.
Proficient with modern survey equipment (GPS, robotic total stations, data collectors).
Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble BusinessCenter, or similar software preferred.
Strong understanding of surveying principles, coordinate systems, and construction layout techniques.
Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and safety.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods.
Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of equipment.
Comfortable working in all weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
