JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Protects public’s health by conducting inspections, site visits and plan reviews to enforce relevant laws, codes, rules and regulations. Provides guidance and education to business owners, local partners and the general public. Conducts investigations in response to complaints and environmental health concerns. Work is performed under supervision and direction of the Health Officer, but latitude is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative, as majority of work is performed in the field. Supports public health emergency response efforts as required. This position is a grade 13 and salary is dependent on experience.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
College degree (4 years) in Microbiology, Biology, or equivalent
One (1) to three (3) years relevant job experience in Environmental Health, and Microbiology or Chemistry.
Enforces local ordinances in areas of food safety (Chapter 170), public bathing facilities (Chapter 290), land use (Chapter 190), sewage disposal (Chapter 255), solid waste (Chapter 270) and animals (Chapter 93).
Conducts routine inspections, subsequent site visits and reinspection to assure compliance with ordinances and relevant codes.
Provides guidance and education to license holders, business and property owners and members of the public.
Conduct investigations in response to complaints and environmental health concerns.
Conducts plan reviews of new and remodeled food service establishments and public bathing facilities.
Conducts pool-side testing and water sampling.
Collects other samples such as foods for routine analysis using aseptic technique.
Calibrates field measuring devices such as thermometers and pH meters.
Monitors and responds to FDA and USDA recalls that affect local food service establishments.
Conducts septic system plan reviews, test pit observations, and bed bottom inspections.
Conducts inspections to ensure compliance with local and state regulations of foster homes, licensed child care providers and schools.
Develops training and educational materials, provides educational presentations and seminars on a broad range of environmental health subjects.
Writes and updates educational messaging regarding current and emerging environmental health issues.
Conducts housing assessments for unsanitary living conditions and makes appropriate referrals to partner agencies.
Interfaces with public and private agencies during routine duties and in the event of an emergency.
Attends conferences, trainings and technical seminars to remain current in industry standards.
Performs other related duties as required
