Camp Mendocino

is a residential summer camp located in Northern California, four hours north of San Francisco and spread over 2,000 acres. We provide transportation between San Francisco and Camp at the start and end of the summer. All Camp employees are expected to live, sleep and work at Camp. As a program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF), we are dedicated to providing children and teens with safe, fun places to learn and grow, with professional staff to offer support and guidance, serving as caring mentors and role models.

Position Purpose The

Native American & Environmental Education Coordinator

leads our pivotal environmental education program, ensuring all campers increase their environmental awareness, utilizing the surrounding redwood forest, discovery center, nature program, and garden. This position also includes programming Native American education covering native plants and animals, history, and culture. This program should promote academic success through environmental and native education.

Key Responsibilities

Provide fun and engaging educational- and environmental-focused activities for all ages

Implement activities focused on redwood forest ecosystems, riparian habitats, native species, sustainability, and care for the environment, including recycling and composting

Maintain the Discovery Center and utilize its current educational aides and books

Provide guided educational interpretive hikes

Work with the leadership team to coordinate speakers and guests

Foster youth development in environmental stewardship

Participate in and contribute to any environmental advocacy happening around Camp

Foster character development consistent with BGCSF philosophy

Participate in all Camp activities, such as: talent shows, camp fires, and flagpole

When not running programming, engage with assigned village, and assume all responsibilities of a Counselor, including overnight supervision of youth in cabins

Engage campers with a positive attitude, including participating in cheers, talent shows, and overnight hikes

Other duties as specified by direct supervisor

Requirements Required Skills

1 year experience designing and leading interpretive environmental programs and hikes

Knowledge of redwood forest ecosystems, riparian habitats, native species, environmental sustainability principles, and environmental interpretation techniques

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers and campers

Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations in a professional manner

Excellent communication skills

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Desire to work outdoors 24/7

Preferred Skills

Experience working with youth in an overnight camp setting

Experience working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances

Background in the green movement

Background in Native Education

Knowledge of California Next Generation Science Standards

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Must be able to walk on uneven terrain for at least 3 miles.

Must be able to stand for 8 hours (with breaks).

Must be able to work in temperatures ranging from 30° to 100°.

Lodging Lodging is provided for all staff on site. Native American & Environmental Education Coordinator will not be required to stay in a cabin with youth on a regular basis, but will be assigned bunk‑style indoor housing that may be shared with up to 8 other staff members.

Schedule

Temporary/Seasonal Summer position.

Applicants should be available June 9- August 6, 2026 to work & live on-site at our Camp location in Northern California (Mendocino County).

Staff members work 40-56 hours/week depending on position with two days off per week. Days off vary per session.

Pay The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and BGCSF needs. At BGCSF, our decisions are based on other factors and depend on each position's circumstances. Depending on the need and requirement of the position, an individual could be hired at or near the entry‑level, mid‑level, or top‑of‑the‑range for their role and compensation. As such, a reasonable estimate for this temporary summer position from June 9- August 6, 2026, is $4,600.
