MHC Healthcare has a promotional opportunity for an Expanded Function Dental Assistant to join the Dental Team at the Clinical Del Alma Health Center, located in Tucson, AZ. The Expanded Function Dental Assistant aids the Dentist by providing assistance as directed by expanded function dental assisting licensure and regulation/protocol.
The following qualifications are required:
High School diploma or equivalency; required.
X-Ray Certification; required.
CPR certification; required.
Coronal Polish Certification; required.
Arizona CODA-accredited Expanded Function coursework at a Board-approved expanded function dental assistant training program and Restorative certification; required.
Fingerprint Clearance Card through the Arizona Department of Public Safety (or ability to obtain upon hire)
The following qualifications are preferred:
Dental Assistant Certification; preferred.
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if applicable and must be directly related to the functions and body of knowledge required to successfully perform the job.
This position has the following supervisory responsibility:
There is no supervisor responsibility for this position.
The ideal candidate will also possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of state and federal regulations as applicable.
Knowledge of infection control protocols and procedures.
Knowledge and ability to place and finish/polish amalgam and composite restorations and cement prefabricated crowns.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensures quality of care by preparing treatment area for patient; cleans, sterilizes and sets up treatment area, and accesses patient’s chart.
Prepares patient for treatment by reviewing medical chart, greeting, seating, draping, taking blood pressure, as necessary, and providing relevant information.
Ensures efficiency of dentist by sterilizing and delivering instruments to treatment area; positioning instruments for dentist’s access; suctioning and passing instruments.
Ensures readiness of materials by selecting, mixing bases/impression materials, and placing materials for use.
Mounts and files dental x-rays per department procedures.
Maintains patient confidence by counseling patient on dental health, requesting consent for extractions/treatment, giving post‑op instructions, and scheduling follow‑up appointment.
Protects patients and co‑workers by adhering to infection control policies and procedures.
Maintains and monitors equipment for department operations, ensuring that autoclave is monitored by using spore testing.
Ensures adequate stock is on hand by inventorying and ordering supplies as necessary.
Ensures operation of dental equipment by following procedures for maintenance, evaluation and usage.
Ensures treatment areas are adequately stocked and ready for use.
Participates in in‑service/education regarding Quality Improvement.
Expanded functions include the placement, contouring and finishing of direct restorations or the placement and cementation of prefabricated crowns following the preparation of the tooth by a licensed dentist. The restorative materials used shall be determined by the dentist.
An expanded function dental assistant may place interim therapeutic restorations under the general supervision and direction of a licensed dentist following a consultation conducted through teledentistry.
An expanded function dental assistant may apply sealants and fluoride varnish under the general supervision and direction of a licensed dentist.
The expanded function dental assistant laws can be found in the: Arizona Revised Statutes § 32-1291.01 through the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners
