What We Are Looking For The Wright Group in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry & Biochemistry at Baylor University is seeking a Lab Manager. The Wright Group is focused on phenotype-driven studies of gut and oral microbiomes. The group has more than 30 interdisciplinary undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers, creating a complex and dynamic research setting that spans microbiome sciences, chemical biology and organic chemistry, and mass spectrometry-based omics sciences. The research laboratory manager plays a vital role in ensuring efficient and successful outcomes in the Wright Group.

Our Expectations We are seeking a highly motivated Research Laboratory Manager to join our team. This dual-role position combines laboratory management with research. This position will be responsible for the day‑to‑day operations of our scientific laboratory, which includes managing the inventory and procurement of all lab chemicals and supplies, maintaining equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed, maintaining compliance with Baylor research expectations, and coordinating research projects. You will also supervise our undergraduate and graduate researchers, provide training in lab techniques and lab safety, and onboard new researchers in the group. In addition to these managerial duties, you’ll contribute to our ongoing research by performing research, particularly with external collaborators. Depending on the level of research experience of the successful applicant, you may also take the lead on data analysis, publications, and share in grant writing.

Role Breakdown The breakdown of responsibilities will be approximately 50% lab management and operations, 25% training and personnel management, and 25% research.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience

M.S. with 2+ years experience or a Ph.D. in Microbiology, Chemical Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related field

Experience in an academic lab setting, preferably in chemical biology, proteomics, and/or microbiology

Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and communication skills

Familiarity with safety protocols, chemical hygiene plans, and lab instrumentation

Student mentoring experience

All applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. What You Will Do

Provide training to Wright Group researchers; including training on standard operating procedures and equipment use, safety procedures, and waste procedures

Assure safe laboratory operations and assure all researchers are in compliance with Baylor EH&S

Maintain laboratory instrumentation and serve as a liaison for repairs, service, and new installations

Work with the Wright Group Research Coordinator to assure orders are placed in a timely fashion and the lab maintains necessary items

Oversee omics queue meetings for the Wright Group

Contribute to research projects, including method development, data analysis, and manuscript preparation

Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor’s mission

Ability to comply with university policies

Maintain regular and punctual attendance
