Southpoint Surgery Center (SPSC), an affiliate of North Carolina Specialty Hospital, is a new Ambulatory Surgery Center located between Raleigh and Durham in the Durham‑Southpoint area. SPSC provides a differentiated outpatient delivery model focused on high‑quality, cost‑effective surgical and ancillary care for patients. The 22,298 sq. ft. multi‑specialty facility accommodates Ortho, Spine, Ophthalmology, ENT, GYN, General, Urology, Plastics, Podiatry, Vascular, and Pain services. Primary Objective The primary objective is to assure delivery of comprehensive, safe, cost‑effective and appropriate nursing care for patients across the age continuum (4 weeks‑geriatric), in accordance with established policies, nursing practice standards, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses. The RN should develop excellent working relationships with hospital staff, accept guidance and constructive advice to improve performance, and remain flexible while positively accepting new responsibilities.

Job Duties

Provide individualized nursing care to the surgical patient, demonstrating an extensive knowledge base to support a variety of single and multi‑system illnesses and/or injuries. The RN controls the environment within the surgical suite and is responsible for developing and coordinating a safe plan of care utilizing standards of practice and the policies and procedures of the facility.

Demonstrate appropriate application of age‑specific standards, policies, and procedures and guidelines when caring for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including medication administration, conscious sedation or anesthesia states, and routine unit/clinic procedures.

Incorporate cultural and developmental needs into the plan of care, collaborating with the patient/family in a developmental and culturally appropriate manner.

Demonstrate excellent communication skills, organizational abilities, and decision‑making skills.

Maintain focus on detailed tasks despite interruptions and prioritize work to ensure patient safety.

Document patient care in the patient record according to established standards.

Participate in and promote Universal Protocol and time‑out procedures for every procedure.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members—including surgeons, physician assistants, anesthesia providers, SPD staff, radiology, and other OR team members—to plan patient care and achieve optimal outcomes. The OR RN is a patient advocate, assessing needs throughout the peri‑operative experience and adjusting the plan of care as needed.

Participate in performance‑improvement activities, collecting and analyzing data to identify quantitative measures, maintain quality, and promote desired outcomes. Contribute to the development of patient care delivery systems, standards, policies, and procedures, and engage in problem‑solving teams.

Education and Experience Requirements

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; associate's degree required, BSN preferred.

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the North Carolina State Board of Nursing or a compact multi‑state license.

BLS from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire.

ACLS & PALS from AHA or ARC preferred; must obtain both within 6 months of hire if inactive.

CNOR certification strongly preferred.

Familiarity with instruments and equipment related to peri‑operative nursing.

Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity in handling instruments.
