The Nursing Assistant assists in patient care throughout nursing areas and is responsible for the safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatch services, and appropriate documentation of services rendered. Functions as an observer for any patient on a patient care unit who has been assessed to require constant observation in order to maximize their safety. Performs general receptionist and clerical duties to facilitate efficient functioning of the nursing unit, while ensuring a clear understanding of the patient’s condition to guarantee their care and safety.

Compensation Pay Range:

$18.58 – $25.01 per hour.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct/non‑direct care to patients under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.

Observes, obtains and reports patient data/status to assigned RN.

Responds to changes in acuity and emergent situations as directed by nursing staff.

Maintains current knowledge/certification and BLS certification.

Functions as a preceptor to new employees.

Accepts and responds appropriately to feedback and recommendations for change.

Demonstrates professional working relationships with colleagues from all disciplines to promote a positive/encouraging workplace.

Stays informed about changes in hospital policy and procedure.

Fosters a “Culture of Safety” through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.

Verifies patient identification with two identifiers prior to the start of any procedure.

Understands individual role/responsibilities in the event of hospital codes and emergency preparedness.

Complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines, universal precautions, and proper use of personal protective equipment; appropriately disposes of hazardous materials.

Recognizes each patient’s fall risk and applies appropriate safety devices and interventions.

Conducts patient safety rounds utilizing SBAR and follows the chain of command to communicate any identified safety risks.

Employs proper body mechanics and uses patient lifts as needed.

Utilizes software applications required by the department and unit standards, and understands operation during downtime.

Works within legal, regulatory and ethical practice standards and complies with all applicable policies and procedures.

Safeguards the privacy and security of patient information per SSH’s privacy and security programs.

Reports potential compliance issues to a manager, supervisor, director or vice‑president.

Complies with mandatory education requirements of the compliance, privacy and security programs.

Conveys respect for values, preferences, and expressed needs of the patient and family, recognizing them as important members of the healthcare team.

Collaborates with patient and family in planning, implementing, and evaluating care.

Welcomes the presence and participation of family members at all times according to patient preferences.

Considers individual needs of each patient and family member, possessing age and cultural knowledge and awareness.

Interacts with sensitivity in the delivery of care/services to diverse populations.

Effectively utilizes resources such as interpreter services and online sources.

Requirements Education (Preferred):

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience (Preferred):

Previous Nursing Assistant or equivalent experience.

Required Classes / Skills:

BLS – Basic Life Support certification.

Additional Knowledge & Abilities:

Basic medical terminology, basic computer skills, effective communication and documentation, ability to interact with diverse individuals.

Schedule:

11:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m., 40 hrs per week, rotating weekends and holidays.

Certification Requirements:

ACLS (AHA) – Advanced Cardiac Life Support; BLS – Basic Life Support; ACLS Instructor; BLS Instructor.
