Perfusionist – Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) serves as the flagship hospital of Baylor Scott & White Health – North Texas. Job Summary The Perfusionist provides patient care by operating extracorporeal circulation equipment in surgeries and other critical procedures. The role involves selecting appropriate equipment and techniques, monitoring the patient and equipment, administering drugs and gases, and maintaining thorough perfusion records under physician supervision.

Essential Functions

Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other personnel fully informed.

Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment as well as the correct set‑up and breakdown of disposable and non‑disposable equipment.

Monitors cell saver and operates the heart‑lung machine, blood‑gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac‑assist devices.

Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in accordance with best practices and established policies.

Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs, and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit to achieve safe and effective procedures.

Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; analyzes and maintains records after surgery.

Performs quality control and preventive maintenance to ensure equipment accuracy and longevity; maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

Key Success Factors

Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and biology.

Knowledge of several cardiac diseases, defects, and congenital anomalies.

Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric, and infant patients.

Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific paths of blood flow; pressures and gas exchange within the body for all patient ages.

Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition, and use of blood products in support of extracorporeal circuits and devices.

Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.

Verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to follow orders, take directions, and implement written perfusion protocols.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal support devices and to provide patient care.

Ability to learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards and protocols that apply to operating room procedures and departmental policies.

Ability to work and cooperate flexibly in a cohesive team approach.

Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited perfusion program required.

Experience:

1–2 years of intermediate level perfusion experience preferred.

Certification/License:

Cert. Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) – Texas Medical Board required at time of hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer.
