Job Description The Roadway Maintenance Technician operates automotive and maintenance equipment to transport material, equipment and maintenance personnel, and performs skilled highway maintenance duties. The role includes participating in building maintenance, receiving assignments from the Maintenance Supervisor or Manager, and occasionally supervising personnel on job assignments.
Key Responsibilities
Operate equipment such as tractors, mowers, sweepers, bucket trucks, truck mounted attenuators (TMAs) and snowplows.
Operate assigned gas or hand tools to complete daily assignments.
Inspect equipment for proper operating condition, make minor repairs or adjustments, lubricate, and assist in making repairs as required.
Perform skilled maintenance such as traffic control, pavement repair, landscaping, painting, relamping, guardrail and barrier repairs, and be available on‑call after hours for emergency maintenance service, as needed.
Respond to traffic incidents, provide roadside assistance to motorists on I‑66 and be available on‑call after hours for emergency incident response, as needed.
Perform miscellaneous building maintenance as required.
Perform any other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education, Experience & Certification
A Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsement of air brakes is desired.
1–3+ years of experience in general roadway maintenance, traffic control, and traffic management is desired.
Previous experience with construction vehicles and snow removal operations is desired.
Basic knowledge of automotive mechanics.
Professional Qualities
Ability to interact with colleagues in a team structure.
Self‑motivated and able to motivate others.
Good communication skills.
User level of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint) and capable of learning and using other PC‑based software.
Must be able to multitask and problem‑solve within a fast‑paced environment.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Ability and willingness to work alternate work schedules, including weekends and night shifts, and may be assigned to a scheduled shift as needed.
May be required to work off hours on a regularly scheduled basis.
The noise level in the work environment may be moderate to high at times.
Some roadway travel required.
The employee must be able to individually lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, drive, and sit for long periods of time during day and night operation.
Ability to work in elevated positions in various weather conditions.
