Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer – City of Tucson The Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering technology-driven transportation projects that improve mobility, safety, and efficiency for the traveling public. The role oversees the development, deployment, and maintenance of ITS infrastructure such as traffic signal systems, adaptive signal control, connected vehicle applications, traveler information systems, and other smart mobility initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Plan, organize, and manage ITS projects, including traffic signal systems, adaptive signal control, communication networks, connected vehicle technologies, and traveler information systems.

Prepare project scopes, schedules, budgets, cost estimates, and procurement documents.

Administer consultant and contractor contracts, monitor performance, and ensure compliance with terms and conditions.

Coordinate with internal departments, regional agencies, utility providers, and state and federal partners to ensure integration and consistency with transportation programs.

Review plans, specifications, and technical documents to ensure compliance with standards, codes, and project requirements.

Oversee testing, integration, and acceptance of ITS systems and infrastructure.

Prepare reports, technical memoranda, grant applications, and presentations to elected officials, stakeholders, and the public.

Monitor system operations, evaluate effectiveness, and recommend modifications to improve safety, mobility, and efficiency.

Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in transportation systems and smart mobility.

Perform other duties as assigned (all duties are subject to change).

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of relevant experience.

Combination of education and experience substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.

A valid and unrestricted driver’s license with at least two (2) years of licensed driving.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.

Experience with connected and automated vehicle technologies, fiber‑optic and wireless communication systems, or smart‑city applications.

Prior municipal, county, or state‑government agency experience.

Experience securing and managing state and federal grant funds.
