Job Summary We are currently hiring a
Shop Trailer Mechanic I . This on‑site shop position focuses on DOT inspections, preventive maintenance inspections, and light repairs. The mechanic assists higher‑level technicians, learning advanced mechanical skills and diagnosis. Success requires compliance with all company policies and high performance metrics.
Duties
Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day.
Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform the job; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information.
Work with the Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, and resolve issues.
Manage concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work activities and time allocations.
Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical and professional standards.
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication of equipment.
Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
Document work according to company standards and upload pictures of completed tasks, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using the company‑issued device and/or Karmak application.
Accurately complete DOT forms and other required documentation in a timely manner.
Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to most standard repair times.
Communicate with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings and notes.
Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
Participate and complete all company‑required safety training.
Maintain assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks, and perform daily pre/post trip inspections.
Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various trailer equipment and systems, including trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Requirements
High School Diploma/GED and up to 2 years’ experience in a related field.
Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties.
OEM training and certifications are preferred.
Participate in and complete all company‑required training.
Candidate must comply with DOT FMCSA regulations, complete a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical (or provide a valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining).
Safe drivers needed; a valid driver’s license is required.
Required Certifications (or Obtained Within 18 Months)
ASE T8 (PMI) certification
Preferred Certifications
ASE 608/609 certification*
Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Ability to apply new information for current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making.
Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; tolerate moderately heavy labor.
Physical endurance over long periods, including repetitive tasks.
Accurate visual judgment of object distances.
Effective communication, both written and verbal, organized and succinct.
Ability to determine the type of tools and equipment needed for a task.
