Job Summary The Plant Operations II General Maintenance Operative performs a variety of semi‑skilled maintenance and repair duties to support safe, efficient operation of the facility’s systems and infrastructure. Building upon entry‑level experience, this role includes routine inspections, basic troubleshooting, assistance with mechanical and utility systems, and support of skilled trades. The Operative works under moderate supervision and is expected to demonstrate initiative, reliability, and an increasing level of technical competence.

Essential Functions

Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance of basic building systems and equipment

Assists with minor repairs to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry components

Operates facility vehicles and equipment such as pallet jacks, snowplows, and utility carts

Monitors facility systems and reports abnormal conditions or failures to supervisory staff

Helps maintain safe and clean mechanical, electrical, and utility areas

Transports tools, materials, and equipment to support maintenance or construction projects

Responds to routine work orders and assists skilled technicians with intermediate‑level tasks

Completes documentation, logs, and checklists to track maintenance activity

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

Basic understanding of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems

Ability to use hand and power tools safely and correctly

Comfortable working around mechanical systems and in utility areas

Follows safety regulations including PPE use and lockout/tagout procedures

Good communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Demonstrates initiative, reliability, and eagerness to expand skill set

Frequent walking, standing, kneeling, lifting up to 75 lbs, and climbing ladders

Regular use of hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment

Occasional exposure to electrical panels, chemicals, dust, noise, and temperature extremes

Visual and auditory capacity to monitor alarms and observe equipment operation

Participates in safety drills, team meetings, and training activities

Reports unsafe conditions and participates in maintaining a safe work environment

Maintains professional behavior, attendance, and compliance with department protocols

Qualifications

Education High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Technical coursework or maintenance‑related training (Preferred)

Licenses/Certifications Valid state‑issued driver’s license (Required)

Additional certifications may be required per facility policy

Experience One (1) year of experience in facility operations, building maintenance, or related work (Required)
