Job Summary The Supervisor - Plant Operations is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the central plant, including maintenance, repairs, and operational support for boilers, chillers, and life safety systems. The role includes managing maintenance staff, coordinating preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining operational readiness of essential utility systems. This position requires the ability to work independently, provide technical guidance to staff, and effectively manage resources to ensure safe and efficient facility operations.
Essential Functions
Supervises maintenance staff, including assigning tasks, monitoring work quality, and providing training
Oversees preventive maintenance schedules for boilers, chillers, and other critical plant equipment
Monitors and maintains the Energy Management System, ensuring optimal performance
Coordinates the inspection, testing, and repair of life safety systems, including fire doors and smoke barriers
Maintains equipment logs, work orders, and documentation for regulatory compliance
Assists in the preparation of budgets, capital projects, and resource allocation
Provides technical guidance on complex mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
Ensures compliance with NFPA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards
Participates in emergency response planning and drills
Collaborates with other departments to address facility needs and maintain operational continuity
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and central plant operations
Proficient in reading blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and facility management software
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, vendors, and regulatory agencies
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and perform physical tasks such as climbing, kneeling, and carrying equipment
Qualifications Education
High school diploma or equivalent required
Completion of a two-year certificate program in maintenance or a skilled trade preferred
License/Certifications
4th Class Engineer License may be required per facility policy
Journeyman or State License in HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing may be required per facility policy
UST Fuel Certification may be required per facility policy
Experience
Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in central plant operations, mechanical systems, or maintenance required
Supervisory experience in a healthcare or industrial setting preferred
