Qualifications Current registration as an active status Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission of Dietetic Registration.
Prerequisite: At least one year of professional nutrition work experience (preferred).
Additional requirements: valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Criminal background check required.
Overview The Nutritionist 2 determines participant eligibility for the WIC program by assessing nutrition risks, conducting counseling, and assigning appropriate food packages. The role supports WIC participants in achieving health goals by providing education on nutrition, breastfeeding, and behavior change. Qualified individuals may also receive medical nutrition therapy. Compared to a Nutritionist 1, the Nutritionist 2 performs work of greater difficulty and may supervise staff. Compared to a Nutritionist 3, the Nutritionist 2 evaluates nutrition services and assesses community needs regionally.
Responsibilities
Determine participant eligibility for the WIC program and certify applicants; analyze anthropometric and hematological measurements, assess nutrition risks, provide counseling, and assign food packages; document all information in the participant's electronic record.
Interpret and explain nutrition data and risks to participants, promote behavior change, assess readiness to change, and assist with client-centered goal setting.
Evaluate participants' progress on nutrition and breastfeeding goals at regular intervals; provide breastfeeding promotion and support; monitor inventory resources related to feeding.
Provide general nutrition education to local health department staff, clients, and community organizations; provide referrals and community resources to participants.
Serve as a lead Registered Dietitian (RD) for clinics; evaluate performance of subordinates or peers; assist in recruiting and interviewing for staff positions.
Document nutrition care plans, MNT, counseling, and education in patients' medical records; consult with healthcare providers to determine nutrition-related needs.
Serve as a nutrition expert on multi-agency committees by providing technical nutrition information and advice.
