Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Current registration as an active status Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission of Dietetic Registration and one year of professional nutrition work (preferred).
Required Qualifications:
Proof of registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission of Dietetic Registration at time of appointment and ongoing maintenance; a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Background Check:
Criminal background check required.
Overview The Nutritionist 2 determines participant eligibility for the WIC program by assessing nutrition risks, conducting nutrition counseling, assigning appropriate food packages. This role supports WIC participants in achieving their health goals by providing education on nutrition, breastfeeding, and behavior change. This class may also provide medical nutrition therapy for qualified individuals. The Nutritionist 2 differs from a Nutritionist 1 in that the latter performs work of more routine difficulty and may be subordinate to a Nutritionist 2, and differs from a Nutritionist 3 in that the latter evaluates nutrition services, assesses community needs at a regional level, and may supervise personnel.
Responsibilities
Determine participant eligibility for the WIC program, including analyzing anthropometric and hematological measurements, assessing nutrition risks, providing nutrition counseling, and assigning food packages. Document all information in participants' electronic record.
Interpret and explain nutrition data and risk to participants to promote behavior change and comply with program guidelines; assess client’s readiness to change and assist with client‑centered goals.
Evaluate participant progress on nutrition and breastfeeding goals at regular intervals throughout certification; provide breastfeeding promotion and support as appropriate. Monitor inventory resources related to feeding.
Provide general nutrition education to local health department staff, clients, and community organizations; provide referrals and community resources.
May be designated as lead Registered Dietitian (RD) for clinics; evaluate performance of subordinates or peers; assist in recruiting/interviewing for staff positions.
Document information associated with patients’ nutrition care plans, MNT, counseling, and education into medical records. Consult with healthcare providers to determine nutrition‑related needs.
Serve as nutrition expert on multi‑agency committees by providing technical nutrition information and advice.
