Overview The Business Development Manager (“BDM”) plays a critical role in developing and managing the business development and marketing strategy for assigned practices and industry groups. These strategies will focus on driving new business from both existing clients and prospects, as well as raising the profile of the firm as a whole. The BDM works proactively with attorneys and business professionals across the firm as well as all members of the Business Development, Marketing and Communications Department to foster a culture of collaboration and marketing across office, practice and industry lines.

Responsibilities

Develop marketing and business development plans for assigned industry and practice groups by leveraging the firmwide strategic plan, tracking OKRs and ROI on initiatives, priorities and goals.

Develop and maintain a robust understanding of group’s key clients, acting as a trusted advisor to group leads and lawyers.

Analyze and monitor market and client research to identify opportunities from emerging trends, challenges, and legal needs within the marketplace.

Collaborate with leadership and key partners to identify client targeting criteria and prospective client targets; identify expansion opportunities and develop cross‑selling initiatives matching firm solutions to client needs.

Develop an in‑depth understanding of the experience within assigned groups to identify potential synergies for existing clients and new prospects. Oversee maintenance of experience records in Foundation for use in proposals and other client‑facing work.

Alongside the Proposal team, compile tailored proposals to win new clients and expand work with existing clients.

Position and draft appropriate content in collateral and marketing materials, including matter and group descriptions for pitches, client‑facing work and the firm website.

Leverage thought leadership across distribution channels, including internal communications and social media.

Oversee educational, networking, and client events in alignment with assigned group business plans and go‑to‑market strategy.

Track and report on business development metrics, client engagement activities, and revenue performance against plan.

Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives as directed by leadership stakeholders.

Act as a connector across internal teams and client stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of the Firm’s capabilities.

Position Requirements

4‑year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications, or a related field; or a combination of education and commensurate work experience.

7+ years of solid marketing and business development experience at progressing levels, preferably in a professional services firm or related organization.

5 years’ management experience in a related field preferred.

Strong business development abilities, including setting priorities, planning, organization, follow‑through, delegation, negotiation skills, and the ability to manage and track budgets and analyze ROI.

Ability to motivate attorneys to engage in business development and to develop and implement business development plans with them.

Experience providing a high level of client service to leaders at all levels of an organization.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to produce compelling proposals, collateral, research reports, and client‑facing presentation materials.

Forward‑thinking with proven ability to deliver solutions to complex challenges.

High level of maturity and confidence necessary to interact with sophisticated internal and external clients.

Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Compensation & Benefits Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation ranges for this position in various states and jurisdictions are as follows:

California: $111,000 - $211,000

Colorado: $102,000 - $182,000

Illinois: $100,000 - $194,000

Massachusetts: $111,000 - $211,000

Maryland: $107,000 - $163,000

Minnesota: $111,000 - $183,000

Jersey City, NJ: $120,000 - $218,000

New York: $103,000 - $223,000

Vermont: $109,000 - $210,000

Washington: $107,000 - $204,000

Washington, D.C.: $143,000 - $210,000

The above salaries do not include a discretionary bonus; however bonus opportunities are non‑guaranteed and dependent on individual and firm performance.
