Position Highlights
Full‑time, first shift schedule – Monday to Friday, 7:45 AM to 3:00 PM (36.25 hours per week)
14‑week paid hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development in Cheshire, CT
Key responsibilities include maintenance, operation, and oversight of HVAC, HVAC, steam, hot water, and chilled water systems within a correctional environment
Key Responsibilities
Maintain steam, hot water heating, and chilled water piping and distribution systems
Maintain ventilation distribution, fan, and HVAC systems
Maintain steam and hot water boilers; maintain chilled water piping and chiller systems
Maintain cell ventilation and ductwork
Supervise assigned inmates in a correctional institution
Keep records of tools and inventory control
Protect the health and safety of staff, inmates, and the public
Conduct snow and ice removal to keep access safe for police, medical, and public use
Ensure compliance with federal and state statutes, directives, and policies, maintaining humane conditions of confinement

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
Three (3) years of experience in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration trade
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience
One (1) year of experience at the highly skilled level of the HVAC trade
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with repair and operation of commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment and controls
Valid S1, S2, D1, or D2 licensing (or equivalent)
Experience with computer‑building management systems and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of HVAC, steam, and chilled water systems, including materials, methods, tools, and controls
Knowledge of hazardous material regulations and computerized HVAC control systems
Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Ability to operate and interpret automated control systems, plan maintenance schedules, maintain records, read schematics, and instruct inmates or employees
Supervisory ability and stress tolerance under pressure situations
Special Requirements
Minimum age of 18
Formal correctional work training may be required
May be required to respond to after‑hour emergencies and possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license
Travel may be required
Physical Requirements
Must be in general good health, possessing sufficient strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and sensory acuity to perform all duties
Comprehensive medical examination, including drug screening, required upon conditional employment offer
Working Conditions Incumbents may be exposed to injury or assault by inmates with tools of the trade used as weapons. They may also encounter the dangers and discomfort associated with task machinery and equipment.
