The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is recruiting for a Correctional HVAC Technician to join the Brooklyn Correctional Institution. This recruitment may also fill vacancies across state correctional facilities as openings occur within the next year.

Position Highlights
This is a full‑time, first shift position (36.25 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 3:00 PM).
Selected candidates will attend a 14‑week paid hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development in Cheshire, CT.
Key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Maintain steam, hot water heating, and chill water piping/distribution systems.
Maintain ventilation distribution, fan, and HVAC systems.
Maintain steam and hot water boilers.
Maintain chilled water piping/distribution systems and chilled water (chiller) systems.
Maintain cell ventilation and ductwork.
Supervise assigned inmates at a Correctional Institution.
Keep records of tool/inventory control.
Protect the health and safety of the public, staff, and inmates.
Perform snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for police, medical, staff, and the public.
Maintain mandated compliance with federal and state statutes and agency directives to ensure humane conditions of confinement.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work) In a correctional facility or district, this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for inmates and independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring, and installation of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related control systems.
Examples of Duties
Perform highly skilled maintenance and construction work requiring trade skills, codes, and standard practices.
Train and supervise inmates assigned to HVAC tasks.
Ensure compliance with standard trade practices and codes on air systems.
Troubleshoot and perform repair and installation of HVAC equipment, including chilled water, Freon, and condenser systems.
Install or repair electric or pneumatic controls.
Determine required cooling capacity for small areas.
Use and interpret psychometric charts.
Utilize diagnostic equipment to measure air flow, room changes, and pressurization.
Operate and maintain building and energy management systems.
Perform preventative maintenance tasks.
Maintain custody and discipline of inmates assigned to work areas.
Determine and obtain required materials.
Maintain records.
Operate heavy equipment as necessary.
Perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience and agency needs.
Physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances, and assist security forces in emergencies.
Operate a motor vehicle if required.
Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment involved in HVAC trade.
Knowledge of hazardous material regulations and computer‑based heating and cooling systems.
Skills:

Operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems.
Plan, layout, and schedule maintenance assignments.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Read schematics and flow charts.
Instruct inmates or employees in trade techniques and skills.

Supervisory ability.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience Three (3) years of experience in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration trade.
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at a highly skilled level.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the HVAC trade may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
Experience performing technical duties within the HVAC trade on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with repair and operation of commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
Valid S1 (Unlimited Heating, Piping, and Cooling Contractor), S2 (Unlimited Heating, Piping, and Cooling Journeyperson), D1 (Limited Warm Air, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractor), D2 (Limited Warm Air, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Journeyperson) licenses.
Experience with computer‑building management systems and Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook and Excel.
Special Requirements
Must have reached the 18th birthday.
May be required to complete a formal training course in correctional work.
May be required to respond to after‑hour emergencies.
May be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
May be required to travel.
Character Requirements Background investigation and reference checks are conducted prior to appointment. Employment is subject to the State Code of Ethics for Public Officials.
Physical Requirements

Required physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity.
