Job Summary

The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant II provides moderately complex rehabilitative patient care under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse in an inpatient psychiatry setting. Responsibilities include emergency, health, and personal care services, therapeutic interactions, observation and documentation, and participation in individualized and unit‑based programming. The role promotes patient progress toward a less restrictive environment and supports the recovery team.

Key Responsibilities

Perform patient care services under RN supervision, including emergency, health, and personal care.

Engage therapeutically with patients, monitor and document behaviors, and support progress toward recovery goals.

Assist with activities of daily living, hygiene, and nutrition to promote independence and self‑care.

Assist with medication monitoring, vital sign checks, and other assigned nursing duties.

Respond to crisis or psychiatric emergency situations using least restrictive intervention (TIPS) and de‑escalation techniques.

Perform CPR/Heimlich and AED as required by American Heart Association guidelines.

Communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team and complete recovery team or admissions team meetings.

Co‑facilitate patient groups, encourage participation in classes and programs, and promote safety.

Provide guidance to lower‑level PNAs and participate in unit‑based or hospital‑wide committees.

Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster response or COOP activation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Patient care techniques and recovery programs.

Basic computer skills and documentation.

Interpersonal and leadership skills.

Vital sign measurement.

Proficient reading, writing, and speaking in English.

First aid/CPR and TIPS execution.

Ability to work under supervision and train others.

Licensure & Certifications

Valid Texas driver license (or obtain within 90 days of hire).

CPR certification within 60 days of employment.

Initial Screening Criteria

High school graduation; or

12 months of direct care experience.

Preferred Qualifications

12 months of direct care experience.

Background checks, drug screen, and immunizations as required by HHSC.
