The
Montana Department of Transportation (MDT)
is recruiting for a Tax Examiner. This position ensures compliance with Montana’s motor fuel, alternative fuels, and electric vehicle (EV) charging station tax laws and regulations by conducting secure processing and detailed verification of refund applications and tax returns, and maintaining records. Ensure work is completed in compliance with the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA). Responsible for analyzing system reports, resolving discrepancies, and supporting both taxpayers and department staff. This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities. This position reports to the Revenue Administration Section Supervisor and does not supervise others.

Required Education And Experience Level 1.1 ($27.85/hr)
- Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field; OR 4 years of related experience.
Level 2.1 ($32.76/hr)
- Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field and 1 year of related experience; OR 5 years of related experience.
Alternative combinations of related experience and education may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Skills in reviewing documents and systems for accuracy.
Ability to provide customer service to a variety of customers in person, via email and over the phone.
Ability to learn the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) regulations.
