Deputy Sheriff Recruit – Detention and Corrections Join the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office as a Detention Deputy Recruit for the Agency Sponsored Detention Academy with a hire date of August 31, 2026. Nature of Work Applicants must be at least 19 years old and meet the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) standards as authorized by F.S.S. 943.13. The role requires passing all academy exams, completing training, and working rotating 12‑hour shifts upon completion of the academy.

Compensation and Benefits

Signing Bonus:

$3,000 (for candidates with less than 3 years Certified Law Enforcement experience)

Annual Salary while attending the 14‑week academy:

$68,960

12‑hour shifts after academy completion

Responsibilities

Attend a thirteen‑week Correctional Basic Recruit Academy at SEPSI

Pass all academy exams with a minimum score of 80%

Receive training in the following disciplines: Correctional Operations & Procedures, Firearms Training, Defensive Tactics, First Responder Techniques, Officer Survival, Emergency Preparedness

Attend two weeks of high‑liability training at PCSO in addition to the academy

Attend one week of agency orientation

Successfully complete ten weeks of field training

Participate in sheriff’s office recruitment and community relations activities as directed

Perform duties on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Qualifications

Minimum 19 years of age

High school graduation or equivalent diploma from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or licensed by the Commission for Independent Education

Previous college credits from a regionally accredited college that include English Comp I, or successful completion of the PERT, administered by St. Petersburg College

Pass the Police Officer’s Screening Test administered by Human Resources

Pass the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office new‑hire physical assessment

Pass the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test for Corrections

Successful completion of correctional training as required by the State of Florida

Upon completion of training, obtain certification by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (F.S.S. 943.13)

Maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License (minimum Class E)

Subject to a credit check

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Meet SEPSI Academy requirements in all high‑liability areas (firearms, defensive tactics, firefighting)

Apply Florida Model Jail Standards and sheriff’s office rules for correctional work

Understand and apply modern correctional principles & practices

Apply applicable laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations

Execute cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures

Learn and apply principles of criminology & penology as they relate to corrections

React quickly and calmly in emergency situations

Understand, express, and follow oral and written instructions

Work collaboratively within a team

Enforce department rules with firmness, tact, and impartiality while dealing courteously with the public

Observe and respond to situations promptly and objectively

Complete periodic in‑service training in all high‑liability areas

Practice safe handcuffing procedures

Operate and maintain equipment used in corrections

Comply with the Drug Free Workplace Act

Physical Abilities

Satisfactory medical standards per FDLE form CJSTC 75A and agency clearance

Visual acuity of 20/30 in each eye (or 20/100 uncorrected)

Hearing acuity no more than 25 dB at 500‑2000 Hz and 30 dB at 3000 Hz

Lift at least 50 lb from floor to waist

Sit, stand, and walk up to 12 hours per day

Attend to sounds at normal voice range and radio/siren signals

Maintain physical conditioning to subdue and restrain inmates

Perform periodic in‑service training in all high‑liability areas

Assist physically as required

Wear and use a Scott Air Pack (~30 lb) on the back

Climb stairs carrying an 8‑lb shotgun sling or Air Pack

Fire authorized revolver or semi‑automatic handgun from any position with accuracy

Drive a motor vehicle safely and efficiently

Execute job functions without posing a threat to others’ safety
