Advanced Practice Provider (PA or APRN) – Leukemia MD Anderson Cancer Center, a world‑leading institution, invites a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to join our Leukemia team. This department is one of the most successful disease‑specific cancer programs worldwide, offering over 50 active clinical trials with therapies that provide significant benefit over standard of care.

Key Functions Patient Care and Treatment

Provide quality patient care tailored to the patient's diagnosis, treatment, age, developmental and other identified needs.

Obtain medical history, perform a physical examination and psychosocial assessment.

Review and interpret exam findings, laboratory and/or radiographic tests, and formulate a plan for further diagnosis and therapeutic management in collaboration with the attending physician.

Document all pertinent information within the patient's medical record per institutional policy.

Perform admissions and discharge responsibilities.

Manage systems, toxicities and complications related to the patient's disease and/or treatment in collaboration with the attending physician.

Order consultations, diagnostic tests or procedures as indicated.

Communication and Research

Communicate verbally and in writing with physicians, multidisciplinary team members, and external care providers.

Facilitate communication between patient/family, primary and/or multidisciplinary team.

Provide education to patients and their families. Participate in the conduct of clinical research.

Assist with eligibility assessments.

Monitor side effects of toxicities associated with investigational treatments, and document according to protocol requirements.

Procedures and Privileging

Perform bone marrow aspiration/biopsy procedures.

Perform lumbar punctures and Ommaya taps with or without administration of intrathecal chemotherapy.

Maintain privileging once obtained.

Education and Experience

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse:

Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.

Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Physician Assistant:

Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.

Preferred:

At least 1 year of experience in an Advanced Practice Provider role.

Licensure / Certification

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse:

Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) if working in the following departments: Pediatric – Patient Care (113100).

MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Physician Assistant:

PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.

Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS or PALS if working in one of the following department: Pediatrics – Patient Care (113100).
