Organizational Unit Overview

The Department of Surgery is a multi‑faceted organization in a complex organizational structure. It is a department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for patient care, medical education and research. The Chair of the department is also the Chief of Surgical services for the hospital and, as such, has a broad range of activities including administration of the OR; allocation of scarce OR resources; adequacy of surgical beds; and credentialing of hospital surgical staff. The department includes full‑time faculty members in the sections of: general & bariatric surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, transplant surgery, trauma & acute care surgery. The department faculty provide surgical care to the people of eastern North Carolina, including pre‑operative and post‑operative care. The department provides surgical education to medical students and residents every day of the year. The department also has a vibrant research program including funded grants and clinical trials. The employees in the department support the clinical, education and research work of the department. To accomplish these tasks requires a highly competent, appropriately classified, and an adequately paid staff. Job Duties

ECU Health Physicians and East Carolina University’s Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, are seeking applicants to fill the positions of Trauma and Acute Care Surgeons. Academic employment at title/rank of Clinical Assistant Professor/Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor/Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor/Professor is available. Tenure track is available to qualified applicants. The successful candidate will join a division of eleven academic acute care surgeons in the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery to staff the Trauma Service, Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency General Surgery at ECU Health Medical Center, an ACS verified level 1 University Trauma Center. The Trauma Center experiences an annual patient volume of approximately 4,000 injured patients, including a 15% rate of penetrating injury. ECU Health Medical Center is the flagship hospital for ECU Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. ECU Health Medical Center is a fully accredited JCAHO hospital and is a 974‑bed tertiary referral center, providing acute, intermediate, rehabilitation and outpatient health services to more than 1.4 million people in 29 counties. Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability. While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into TSERS. Contingent on availability of funding. Qualifications MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution and conferred by the time of hire, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.

Applicants should be board certified in general surgery and have completed a surgical critical care or acute care surgery fellowship and be either board certified or eligible in surgical critical care.

NC medical license.

Candidates with less than 5 years of experience with a special interest in teaching and research are desired, but qualified mid‑career academic surgeons will be considered.
