Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission – Senior Park Aide Location: Othello, WA. Closes: January 9, 2026, at 5 p.m. PST. Position status: Permanent. Park housing is unavailable for this position.

About this position Under the supervision of a Park Ranger, this position is essential to Washington State Park's mission of operating, enhancing, and protecting our Parks' recreational cultural, historical and natural sites. The Senior Park Aide supports day‑to‑day operations for Potholes State Park area by assisting and contributing toward all aspects of park operations and leads work responsibilities.

This position is not eligible to telework, as physical on‑site presence is required to perform essential functions.

Interested in working outside performing a wide variety of tasks at a beautiful lakefront park? Some refer to Potholes State Park as an oasis in the desert. This position will lead other staff in landscape maintenance, customer service, light machine and building maintenance, and campground registration duties. Duties

Leads Park Aides.

Answers phones and provides information to the public.

Cleans and performs maintenance on campsites, picnic sites, and park buildings including restrooms, trails, roads, removing and disposing of ashes from stoves and BBQs, clean tables, pick‑up and dispose of litter, remove debris from grounds with hand tools and larger equipment, maintain light fixtures, and painted surfaces.

Maintains Park lawns using a mower, weed eaters, trimmers and various other tools. This includes cleaning the equipment, fueling and maintaining, recording use and reporting any problems.

Assists rangers in maintaining all facilities in a condition that is operationally functional, clean in appearance, and safe for the public and staff, including park grounds, structures, utility systems, vehicles, equipment, tools, trails, fences, restrooms, turf, and irrigation systems.

Performs noxious weed control, parking lot maintenance, restroom cleaning, trash collection, and litter pick‑up.

Independently operates Park vehicles to perform maintenance duties.

Assists with daily camping registration program and trains other staff.

Provides information including educating the public regarding park rules and regulations, local events, activities, walks and talks, and historic information.

Assists with interpretive programs and develops displays and camp events; prepares attendance and interpretive reports.

Collects, sorts, and counts park revenues.

Completes and assists with administrative duties to include monthly equipment and safety logs, reconciliation of funds collected, timesheets, and fuel and oil logs.

Assists Construction and Maintenance staff with completion of projects.

Participates in agency training requirements including workshops, first aid, defensive driving, etc.

Required Qualifications

Option 1:

Twelve (12) months of experience in building maintenance or grounds keeping, or performing semi‑skilled/general carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing repair work

and

a valid unrestricted driver’s license (other than corrective lenses)

and

at least 18 years old.

Option 2:

Six (6) months cumulative experience as a Park Aide (or equivalent)

and

a valid unrestricted driver’s license (other than corrective lenses)

and

at least 18 years old.

Option 3:

Twelve (12) months’ experience in a special employment program (Washington Conservation Corps) with a park’s agency. A combination of experience (WCC and Park Aide) may be used provided candidate has at least three months experience as a Park Aide (or equivalent)

and

a valid unrestricted driver’s license (other than corrective lenses)

and

at least 18 years old.

Desired Qualifications

Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Experience with Point‑of‑Sale (POS) system.

Skilled in writing and editing correspondence.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Provide customer service in a positive and professional manner.

Core Competencies

Facilities and Grounds Maintenance:

Primarily involves the upkeep of the physical park environment, including structures, turf, trails, fences, irrigation systems, and general grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and functionality.

Repairs and Construction Support:

Assisting senior staff with utility system maintenance and participating in minor construction or repair projects.

Operational Leadership and Supervision:

Leading park aides, coordinating tasks, and managing daily operational flow within the park environment.

Visitor Services and Engagement:

Direct public interaction, which includes answering inquiries, providing information on rules and local history, managing registration programs, and potentially developing interpretive programs.

Compliance and Professional Development:

Adhering to agency standards, maintaining required uniform appearance, and completing all mandatory safety, first aid, driving, and job‑specific training and certifications.

Increasing and developing knowledge, skills, and abilities; adapting to change and applying new approaches; taking responsibility for learning and adapting, rather than relying on others to fill gaps.

Uniform Information All permanent Senior Park Aides are required to wear a uniform. All permanent Senior Park Aides will receive the following annually: 2 shirts, 1 baseball cap, 1 jacket, 1 beanie/knit cap, and a brim hat every two years; an outerwear jacket every five years; and a boot and clothing stipend of $150 per calendar year.

Working Conditions Position works five (5) days a week; core work hours are typically an evening shift and will adjust with the park’s closing hours. Days off will be two consecutive days midweek. A flexible work schedule may be considered at incumbent's request and is subject to supervisory approval. Incumbent is expected to maintain regular and reliable attendance to accommodate office and customer demands. Travel and overnight travel may be required periodically between parks and/or statewide for meetings, training, and other field work. Travel will be necessary in all types of weather conditions and climates.
