Summary The Health Technician works as a member of all the Critical Care and Ambulatory Care Units: Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Medical Surgical Step-Down Unit (MSSDU), 4-North/ICU, Emergency Department (ED) at North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SGVHS).

Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement – 01/09/2026.

Individual Occupation Requirement (IOR) for Health Aid and Technician Series (0640) – support duties to medical or health personnel.

Specialized Experience: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-5, or

Education: Six (6) months of graduate education related to the position, or

Combination of education and experience.

Duties

Answering and directing phone calls.

Immediate maintenance and cleanliness of reusable medical equipment.

Assist RN in transporting patients to critical care areas and telemetry monitoring.

Restock patient units and prepare areas to receive admissions.

Restock and check crash carts and airway boxes.

Assist RN in post-mortem care.

Complete rounds on all patients and establish a mobility plan with the nurse.

Assist patients with turning, ROM exercises, and ambulation to foster mobility.

Provide physical safety and emotional security for patients, adding information to the nursing care plan.

Use rehabilitation techniques for severely disabled or disturbed patients.

Motivate self-sufficiency in older, apathetic, partially dependent patients.

Assist RN in planning continuing nursing care and follow-up after hospitalization.

Care for patients with atypical problems due to senility or aging-related disabilities.

Serve as unit resource for equipment when trained.

Track equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs with Biomedical and Engineering departments.

Maintain orderly work areas within the unit.

Interpret hospital routines and procedures for patients and visitors.

Perform phlebotomy/specimen collection and transport specimens.

Recognize emergencies and respond appropriately.

Assist patients with deep breathing and coughing.

Remove patient from telemetry in Step-Down unit with follow-up calls after RN instructions.

Observe, report, and record patient observations and psychological reactions.

Anticipate and recognize psychological responses to illness or death.

Perform tasks involving sitting, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, and heavy lifting (35 lbs+).

Use assistive devices and proper body mechanics.

Perform work in ICUs or Medical-Surgical Step-Down units.

Wear prescribed protective devices when in contact with contagious diseases.

Identify patients with contaminated drainage.

Practice safe work habits.

Consider patient age when providing care and its impact on understanding directions.

Preferred experience: 1 year experience as a Nursing Assistant or Healthcare Technician.

Promotion potential to full performance level without further competition when all requirements are met.

Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 12‑hour days/12‑hour nights with weekend rotation. Full-time; not a virtual position.
