Job Description The Junior Industrial Hygienist is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the identification, evaluation, and control of workplace environmental health hazards. Working under the guidance of more experienced industrial hygienists, this role supports the implementation and maintenance of industrial hygiene programs to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. The ideal candidate is a proactive, detail-oriented individual with a strong foundational knowledge of occupational health and safety principles. The purpose of this position is to apply novice level of technical knowledge to sustain a productive work environment in order to avoid and minimize Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) related problems. These problems include but are not limited to prevention of human injury, environmental degradation and unsafe working conditions/practices. This is done through health, safety and environmental training, programs, and processes with a visible and uncompromised commitment to the protection of the environment as well as the productivity of the Company’s employees.
Responsibilities
Assist senior staff with worksite health and safety inspections and exposure assessments for chemical, physical, and biological agents.
Help collect and analyze environmental samples, including air and noise monitoring, following established procedures.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and sample data.
Support the development and delivery of employee training and educational materials on health and safety topics.
Assist in incident investigations and findings for review by senior staff.
Research and apply federal and state regulations, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
Develop basic knowledge of Company specific HSE standards, programs and goals by applying elementary HSE procedures as established by the Company on a project site or in an office through departmental training, and the use of knowledge management portals and communities.
Study design reviews, calculations and models including, as examples, hydrology calculations and dispersion models using standard techniques and guidelines in order to understand possible HSE impact.
Promote HSE standards and goals with programs throughout the Company and/or project to foster a safe and productive work environment.
Assist in the administration of a specific function such as maintaining HSE-specific project files on testing for substance abuse, collecting environmental or health samples, or providing personal protective equipment to project personnel.
Assist in administration and monitor existing HSE programs involving lower levels of employees on the project or in the office through presentations, printed materials, and activities.
Monitor HSE programs by creating basic summaries/reports/presentations for HSE management.
Become familiar with preparation of HSE sections in the Project Execution Plan (PEP) and the Project Procedures Manual (PPM).
Become familiar with HSE permit preparation on projects while gaining understanding of current guidelines and regulations.
Become familiar with the development of HSE project plans and HSE specifications.
Assist in the preparation of surveys, audits, evaluations, inspections, and investigations of incidents and activities to monitor and track HSE standards, programs and goals including project environmental data collection and documentation.
Maintain simple reports or documents that may be required to meet corporate or regulatory requirements, including monitoring application of HSE standards and goals.
Analyze and make independent recommendations regarding solutions to problems with varying complexity in accordance with organization and/or project objectives and guidelines.
Organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
Plan and organize own work assignments, as well as carry out tasks from management staff.
Maintain compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, and global standards.
Adhere to and support our customers Health, Safety & Environmental and Sustainability Policies.
Effectively develop and apply the Core Skills to the job.
May need to travel to attend to business related matters.
Meet expectations on attendance and punctuality.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related scientific field.
Years of Experience: 0–3 years of professional experience in industrial hygiene or a related environmental, health, and safety (EHS) field.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Minimum Qualifications – Related Education, Experience, & Skills
Accredited four (4) year degree or global equivalent in applicable field of study and no required years of work-related experience or a combination of education and directly related experience equal to four (4) years.
If non-degreed; some locations may have additional or different qualifications in order to comply with local requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively with audiences that include but are not limited to management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors.
Job related technical knowledge necessary to complete the job.
Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines.
Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE) or the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
Basic knowledge of risk assessment methodologies and safety management software.
A master’s degree is preferred.
