Ability to accurately interpret construction blueprints
Operate backhoe, bulldozer, motor grader, track hoe, dump truck, steel wheel roller, air hammers, plus concrete mixer
Ability to set road grades and storm sewer grades
Interpret construction plans and stake construction using a level and transit
Operate a striping machine
Work as a team member with other employees
Make decisions within specified time restraints
Communicate effectively with residents, elected officials, other City employees, contractors, etc., both orally and written
Maintain confidentiality
Work autonomously when necessary
Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions
Deal with others in a professional manner
Maintain professional composure in heated situations
Follow departmental and City procedures
Special Requirements
Must have, or obtain within one year, a valid Class B Commercial driver’s license
High school diploma or equivalent required
Additional training in heavy equipment operation strongly recommended
At least three years of experience in street and storm drain construction required
Tools and Equipment Used
Hand tools such as asphalt rakes, shovels, etc.
Heavy equipment such as motor grader, dozer, trucks, rollers, backhoes, etc.
Physical Demands Physical work includes walking, standing, lifting, stãanding and shoveling. Regular outdoor work in all weather conditions. Exposure to paints, asphalt, concrete, and hazardous materials.
Work Environment Regular hours year‑round with occasional overtime and night work when needed. No shift work. 100% outdoors. The operator is occasionally on call and responsible for safety and legal issues related to the work.
Selection Guidelines Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and background investigation; and job‑related tests may be required.
Essential Functions
Maintain city streets
Repair potholes
Repair streets
Paint and stripe all city streets
Install and maintain storm drains>
Clean ditches and storm drains
Build concrete inlets and tops
Construction staking
Construct curbs and gutters
Construct sidewalks
Maintain street signs
Replace street signs
Repair and replace signs as needed
Install street markers
Assist other agencies as needed
Perform other duties as directed
You may be assigned to other city departments to perform various tasks on an as needed basis.
