ED RN – Emergency Department Registered Nurse MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not’-for’profit Catholic medical centers in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Newton and Centerville, two specialty hospitals – MercyOne Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital in Clive – and more than 20 additional facilities. Night Shift 7 PM – 7 AM (12 hour shift)

General Summary:

Provides professional emergency nursing care for acutely ill and injured patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Provides patient and family education, serves as patient advocate, and functions as a preceptor for new employees and students.

Essential Functions:

Apply professional emergency nursing skills in the care and treatment of acutely ill and injured patients using the nursing process.

Promote patient‑centered care through respect, coordination, communication, physical comfort, emotional support, family involvement, and continuity.

Collaborate to create a multidisciplinary team that ensures continuous, well‑coordinated care.

Provide patient and family education and anticipate future educational needs.

Communicate proactively with the healthcare team about care plans, changes in condition, progress, discharge plans, and relevant information.

Respond quickly, efficiently, and calmly to emergent and critical situations.

Manage complex care of critically ill and injured patients and triage per ED policies.

Document comprehensive patient records that are organized, complete, and reflect all nursing care.

Assist providers during examinations and procedures, and provide psychological support as needed.

Employ multiple teaching methods; review discharge instructions to ensure understanding.

Assess community resources when indicated.

Supervise ED Technicians.

Serve as preceptor for students and employees.

Work independently using the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, and professional judgment; recommend improvements to ED standards of care.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Current or compact state RN license issued by the State of Iowa.

One year of RN experience preferred or new graduate with senior nursing preceptorship at Mercy Emergency, prior EMS or pre‑hospital experience.

Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter Abuse training within 3 months of hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 weeks of hire.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 6 months of hire.

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) completion within 1 year of hire.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) completion within 3 months of hire.
