Position Summary The Staff RN on the Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatric Unit provides compassionate, evidence‑based nursing care to older adults with acute psychiatric conditions. The RN collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to promote safety, stabilization, and recovery in a structured therapeutic environment.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized care plans.
Administer medications and monitor for therapeutic and adverse effects.
Provide direct patient care including assistance with ADLs, behavioral interventions, and crisis management.
Monitor and document changes in mental and physical health status.
Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
Educate patients and families on diagnoses, medications, and discharge planning.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state regulations, and Joint Commission standards.
Participate in unit safety rounds, de‑escalation techniques, and emergency response protocols.
Advocate for patient dignity, autonomy, and rights in all aspects of care.
Qualifications
Required:
Current RN license in [State]
BLS certification
Strong clinical judgment and communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, emotionally demanding environment
Preferred:
Experience in psychiatric or geriatric nursing
CPI or other crisis intervention certification
BSN or higher degree in nursing
Physical and Mental Demands
Ability to stand, walk, and assist patients for extended periods.
Capacity to manage stressful situations and respond calmly to psychiatric emergencies.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical interventions when necessary.
Work Environment
