Job Description And Duties
Under the direction of the Community Resources Manager, the Catholic Chaplain provides spiritual and moral guidance to institutional residents and supervises chapel clerks and porters.
Prepares and conducts religious services and administers religious rites.
Organizes and instructs classes in religious ethics and sacred music, and creates duty schedules and reports.
Interviews and counsels inmates on spiritual matters, ethical, moral, and family problems; provides death notifications and related counseling.
Completes CDCR 3030, 602, and other forms, collects and responds to mail and CDCR 22’s in a timely manner.
Oversees facilitation of various religions when needed.
Provides supervision, on‑job training, and performance evaluation of chapel clerks and porters; prepares inmate timecards and month‑end reports.
Arranges programs conducted by visiting religious and allied groups; recruits and trains community volunteers; prepares annual evaluations on religious volunteers; requests volunteer IDs and monitors access to the institution.
Assists with institution canteen audits; oversees faith‑based special events.
Attends a combination of 40 hours in‑service training/on‑the‑job training annually; serves as a consultant to classification committees when designated.
Completes other general duties as needed, including adherence to Department policies, rules and procedures, and timely submission of administrative requests, timesheets, and reports.

Working Conditions Distribution of time spent in various environmental conditions:
Constantly: 2/3 or more of the workday
Frequently: 1/3 to 2/3 of the workday
Occasionally: 1/3 or less of the workday

Department Information Founded in 1885, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) serves as one of the nation's largest and most diverse correctional departments. The California State Prison–Sacramento is a high‑security male institution located in Folsom, CA. Employees may be required to be in close proximity to inmates and may visit various areas within the secured housing units.
Special Requirements

Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview; unofficial or official transcripts may be required upon appointment.
New candidates must submit to a background investigation with Live Scan fingerprinting, TB testing upon appointment, and annual TB evaluation thereafter.
Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, desirable qualifications include:
Ability to organize, prepare, and conduct Roman Catholic religious services and courses on ethics, religion, and sacred music.
Counseling ability for institution residents and families on moral and ethical problems; ability to establish rapport and analyze situations accurately.
Use of spiritual assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation in a clinical setting.
Understanding and supporting others in discovering meaning in suffering, grief, and loss.
Awareness of psycho‑social dynamics, cultural and ethnic differences affecting pastoral care practices.
Provision of intensive pastoral care to individuals in crisis, integration of pastoral theology with practice, and support for decision making based on personal values.
