Job Description Perform technical surveys for a wide variety of transportation projects, ensuring compliance with VDOT, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations. Secure data using field survey equipment, maintain quality through routine control procedures, and support the Location and Design Division and VDOT maintenance and construction programs.
How You Will Contribute
Computer Skills: Establish and apply procedures to manage survey‑related files, using CADD, digital terrain modeling software, and other applications.
Engineering Surveys: Conduct field surveys from scoping to post‑construction, using surveying equipment and tools, complying with VDOT policies and APELSCIDLA regulations.
Quality Control: Perform quality control reviews of work products in the field and office, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Time Management: Perform surveying and mapping functions in accordance with scheduling, coordinate information flow, and adjust priorities as needed.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Following instructions accurately.
Performing mathematical calculations (algebra, geometry, trigonometry).
Performing physically demanding work in various terrain and weather conditions.
Reading and interpreting plans, deeds, plats, road and bridge standards, and property records.
Knowledge of field survey equipment.
Knowledge of surveying principles and practices.
Customer service skills.
Computer and software application skills.
Use of surveying instruments and tools, including programmable calculators and electronic data collection equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Effective communication with customers and following instructions.
Mathematical calculation skills.
Physical stamina for demanding work.
Reading and interpreting plans, deeds, plats, standards.
Knowledge of field survey equipment.
Knowledge of surveying principles and practices.
Computer and software skills, including CADD.
Surveying instrument and tool skills.
Additional Considerations
Training, experience, or education in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
Experience conducting surveys for transportation projects.
Valid Land Survey License, Land Surveyor in Training Certificate, or Survey Apprenticeship Certification.
Physical Requirements Physical requirements include the ability to work in varied terrain, weather, and with physically demanding tasks required for transportation survey operations.
