Licensed Practical Nurse – Outpatient Mental Health Location:

Saint Cloud VA Medical Center, Saint Cloud, MN

Salary:

$50,849.00 / yr – $83,738.00 / yr (Base pay range)

Summary This Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position is located within the Mental Health Outpatient Clinic at the Saint Cloud VA Medical Center in Saint Cloud, MN, where Veterans have access to a full range of mental health services—including assessment, medication management, and individual and group therapy. The LPN works under the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or Provider, delivering a variety of Veteran‑centered physical and behavioral interventions.

Qualifications

United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy)

English Language Proficiency; proficiency in basic written and spoken English required for direct patient care positions (38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d)).

Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed.

Licensure: Active, full, current, and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia.

May be covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in VA Qualification Standard.

Grade‑specific experience requirements (summary):

GS‑03 – None beyond basic requirements.

GS‑04 – Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, or equivalent.

GS‑05 – Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑4 level or equivalent.

GS‑06 – Completion of at least one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS‑5 level or equivalent.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with physical and/or behavioral problems, and to work collaboratively with RN and/or MD/DO staff.

Knowledge of medication administration, documentation, emergency response, equipment management, and patient education as outlined in the qualification standard.

Ability to function under general supervision of an RN or MD/DO and to serve as a professional team member.

Duties

Provide direct nursing care to Veterans, including rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, completing clinical reminders, documenting medication reconciliation, and administering medications, including immunizations and injections.

Conduct patient‑focused assessments and recognize signs and symptoms of withdrawal, reporting findings to the RN or provider.

Maintain cleanliness and organization of patient care areas and medication rooms, restocking supplies and monitoring temperature as assigned.

Provide patient and family education on health promotion, disease prevention, and self‑management in accordance with VA guidelines.

Collaborate with TeleHealth and clinical coordinators to support and enhance telehealth services.

Respond to emergent and non‑emergent situations and report variances to the RN or provider.

Document all care in the electronic medical record, including patient complaints, interventions, and outcomes.

Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, nursing reports, and care planning to ensure continuity and quality of care.

Maintain equipment, ensuring safe use and adherence to infection control standards.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives, offering workflow input and suggestions.

Other duties as assigned.

Employment Type Part‑time – 30 hours per bi‑weekly pay period. Variable shifts scheduled Monday‑Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.; weekends may be required.
