Salary Salary Group: TEXAS-B-20. Salary Range: $5,746.66 – $6,779.25 per month.
Responsibilities The Nurse I (Staff Nurse) performs entry-level to routine nursing work at a competent level in the state hospital under the supervision of the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager. Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients’ nursing care needs, identifies nursing diagnoses or problem lists, formulates an initial plan of care, establishes unit routines, and maintains therapeutic milieu. Makes observations of patient behavior and status and reports to the psychiatrist, other recovery team members, and supervising nurse, as appropriate. Carries out nursing interventions, administers medications, maintains medication administration and controlled drug records, trains other staff members, works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment, performs other duties such as disaster response, and may earn additional pay for evenings, nights, and weekends.

Attends work regularly and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime.
Performs comprehensive assessment of patients’ nursing care needs including physical, behavioral, psychiatric, and social needs.
Observes and analyzes patient behavior and status, documents in the medical record or reports to other team members.
Develops or contributes to the development of individualized recovery plans in collaboration with other recovery team members.
Provides comprehensive individual or group health teaching and coping strategies to patients and/or families.
Utilizes one-to-one counseling skills in therapeutic interactions to assist patients with anxiety and coping strategies.
Initiates and implements population-specific nursing interventions based on appropriate standards of care.
Administers medications and treatments as ordered by the physician and maintains medication administration records.
Establishes and monitors the therapeutic milieu ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment.
Provides training to other staff in psychiatric nursing principles, unit routines, and milieu management.
Initiates and monitors appropriate use of restraint or seclusion to ensure safety of patients and staff.
Performs other duties such as disaster response or COOP activation; such participation may require alternate shift patterns or locations.

Knowledge of accepted medical treatment programs.
Knowledge of community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures.

Licensure Requirements Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Texas or in a party state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact. Or provisionally licensed with a temporary permit awaiting license issuance. Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days if transporting patients.
Initial Screening Criteria Graduation from an accredited nursing program or a four-year college/university with major coursework in nursing.
Additional Information All applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct. Males 18-25 must register with Selective Service. Applicants over 21 may require higher age. Flexibility for overtime and extended hours may be required. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures is required. Hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza vaccinations are required; non‑immunized influenza patients may require mask wearing.
