About the Role
University of Miami is seeking a full-time HIM Data Integrity Analyst (H) to work in Miami, FL. The analyst evaluates data authenticity within the electronic medical record system to facilitate accurate patient matching and synchronize information across systems. The role is part of the University of Miami/UHealth Department Health Information Management.
Core Job Functions
Use current best practice and policy guidance to implement appropriate and accurate patient identification and matching practices.
Identify points in patient identification and data collection processes where patients or consumers input health information that contributes to the accuracy of electronic medical record data (e.g., kiosks, patient portals, questionnaires, uploads).
Apply guidance for the collection and management of patient demographic data such as name, sex, gender, date of birth, and addresses to enhance patient matching for digital front‑door interactions.
Use and understand algorithms within the master patient index (MPI) that identify potential duplicate records and apply best‑practice solutions for patient matching.
Apply terminology used in MPI data management (e.g., false positive, false negative, match weight, HL7/FHIR).
Analyze key demographic data points and collection issues, including common misidentification trends (e.g., twins, siblings, minorities).
Apply MPI metrics such as duplicate rate, match rate, false positive rate, and false negative rate.
Recognize the steps associated with MPI data clean‑up projects and understand systemic impacts of large‑scale clean‑up efforts.
Establish practices that ensure data quality, minimize errors and fraud opportunities, and implement corrective and preventive actions when errors are identified.
Ensure interoperability within and across healthcare systems, specifying parameters for incoming interfaces to the MPI.
Understand the strategic impact of biometrics for patient identification and technical strategies that can be used to accurately match a patient with their data (e.g., barcode scanning, AI for matching).
Comply with hospital requirements and federal regulations such as HIPAA, HITECH, ARRA, the 21st Century CURES Act, and state regulations; work closely with the HIPAA Privacy Office to ensure compliance.
Adhere to University and unit‑level policies, procedures, and safeguards for University assets.
Department Specific Functions
Review accounts in Identity work queues that capture potential duplicate pairs and take appropriate action (e.g., merge records) if validation confirms the patients are the same.
Identify duplicate pairs that are not the same patient and correctly label them (known non‑duplicate or unactionable).
Review accounts with overlaid demographic entries and take appropriate action after validating changes.
Review data from various departments and initiate chart correction cases for corrections, amendments, or deletions to the legal medical record.
Collate data for chart correction case documentation and collaborate with ancillary departments per policy and state guidelines.
Collaborate with IT, Patient Access, Central Business Office, insurance verification, clinical teams, faculty, and other departments to implement solutions for chart correction cases and inaccuracies.
Process accounts with sustained accuracy ratings of 98‑100%.
Maintain productivity levels per departmental metrics.
Complete annual and other required training timely per facility deadlines.
Core Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
AHIMA RHIA or RHIT credential preferred.
AHIMA microcredential in Patient Identification and Matching preferred.
Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
Ability to process and manage confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
