HOUSTON WATER OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN II City of Houston – Houston Water/Drinking Water Operations

Position Overview This position is a Department of Houston Public Works Management position at the Tier 1 Level.

Reporting Locations: Various. Workdays & Hours: 6:00am-6:00pm.

Responsibilities

Develop, review, and comply with standard procedures and tasks requiring analytic ability.

Coordinate plant operations utilizing HMI and SCADA systems.

Monitor and maintain equipment and the surface water treatment plant; report malfunctions to expedite repairs.

Monitor mechanical and chemical processes at multiple locations.

Inspect and test working conditions on all equipment; compare readings with established operational ranges to evaluate system performance.

Initiate system changes within established guidelines that affect process control.

Collect, analyze, and monitor data relevant to maintaining efficient treatment plant operations.

Communicate and coordinate work with other operators and support personnel via telephone and e-mail.

Perform other duties as requested.

Working Conditions The position requires lifting items up to 60 pounds, walking on rough surfaces, and regular physical exertion such as climbing ladders.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or GED certificate.

Two years of plant operation experience.

Valid driver license and compliance with City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).

Valid Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Water or Wastewater Operator's certificate.

For Level II positions, valid TCEQ Class B Water or Wastewater Operator’s certificate appropriate to position location.

License Requirements Valid TCEQ certification as specified above.

Preferences

Experience operating large surface water treatment plants utilizing SCADA.

Preferable to eligible veteran applicants meeting qualifications.

Selection/Skills Tests Required None, but the Department may administer a Skills Assessment Test.

Safety Impact Position Yes. Position subject to random drug testing and, if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

Salary Information Pay grade: 16. Salary determined based on qualifications and pay rates of other employees in this classification.
