JOB SUMMARY This position works under general supervision to ensure that patients are authorized for services related to their medical condition and that this information is disseminated to appropriate parties within UTSW. Responsible for the verification of insurance benefits and required authorizations. Conducts patient notification and education of their potential financial responsibility as it relates to proposed services.

JOB DUTIES
Verifies patient insurance benefits including transplant-specific benefits by utilizing insurance websites or calling insurance companies. Re-verifies active coverage of waitlisted patients per departmental protocols to ensure patient readiness for transplantation and limit financial exposure of the institution.
Documents pertinent activities in Epic Phoenix to drive transplant patient throughput. Keeps detailed documentation of calls and activities on all transplant patients for recordkeeping and continuity in cross-coverage situations.
Coordinates approval process for patients to ensure that UT Southwestern Medical Center referral, medical review and billing policies and procedures are followed.
Coordinates ongoing pre-certification and approval process with insurance case managers and provides clinical updates as requested.
Protects the privacy and security of patient health information to ensure that confidentiality is maintained.
Provides transplant patient education regarding financial aspects of services rendered. Coordinate with clinical financial counselor to assist patients with financial aspects of services rendered.
Advises physicians and other medical staff regarding insurance benefit and financial clearance status of patients.
Meets with patients and their families to discuss potential out-of-pocket expenses related to immunosuppressive drugs and follow-up care.
Coordinates financial/registration process for cases and coordinates flow of information to appropriate departments regarding patients.
Provides notification to hospital and physician billing departments regarding admission process for patients and creates treatment specific insurance coverage in registration area of electronic medical record.
Provides information to appropriate parties to ensure patients are registered and billed correctly. Assists the billing department with appeals when requested.
