Park Ranger Supervisor - Parks
County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. The County’s Regional Park and Open‑Space District is inviting applications for a Park Ranger Supervisor to join the Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park team.
About the Position The Park Ranger Supervisor will oversee the operations and management of Lake Cahuilla, a 710‑acre park that includes trailer/RV campsites, a fishing lake, horseback trails, a beachfront‑style pool and playgrounds. Responsibilities include managing the park’s budget and standard operating procedures, supervising park rangers and other staff (volunteers and work‑release workers), monitoring and patrolling the park, and collaborating with public agencies and service providers to implement effective solutions while communicating progress toward program goals.
Competitive candidates should have experience working in a park or open‑space environment, strong leadership skills in customer service and conflict resolution, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and point‑of‑sale systems, knowledge of centralized maintenance software, and a valid Aquatic Facility Operator Certification (AFO) is highly desirable.
Work Schedule & Uniform 5/40 schedule, Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Availability on weekends, holidays, and overtime is required.
Uniforms are provided and consist of a shirt and pants.
Essential Duties
Plan, schedule, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of staff engaged in the operations of a County park area; train Park Rangers in outdoor education, interpretive programs, first aid techniques and departmental practices, policies and procedures.
Interpret and explain park policies, rules, regulations and ordinances; oversee registration of visitors, fee collection, issuance of camping permits and assignment of the general public to parking areas.
Interpret the natural and historical features of the park area to visitors.
Present lectures on area development and local flora and fauna; attend and evaluate presentations of subordinates; assist in reviewing plans and specifications for park site projects and recommend modifications.
Participate in hiring, promoting, disciplining and terminating personnel; answer public inquiries and complaints concerning park operations and maintenance.
Provide assistance in emergency situations; maintain fire prevention standards and practices as established by the State Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.
Plan and assist with promotions and special events.
Patrol park areas to promote an orderly and congenial atmosphere among visitors, and to resolve problems; issue warnings and citations under appropriate laws or ordinances for non‑compliance of park regulations; if needed, utilize law enforcement agencies to achieve compliance.
Will make court appearances; maintain records and prepare reports; requisition equipment and supplies; inform supervisor on progress of work.
Supervise and serve as the project lead on Open‑Space Reserve projects, which includes seasonal patrol scheduling, habitat improvement and creation projects, prescribed burns and vegetation management.
Minimum Qualifications
OPTION I
– Graduate of an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in park or public recreational operations, development or protection, including planning and conducting recreational and educational activities and enforcing laws and ordinances.
OPTION II
– Six years of experience in park, forest, or public recreational or historical area operations, maintenance, development or protection, including planning and conducting recreational and educational activities and enforcing laws and ordinances. College-level courses may substitute for up to four years of experience on the basis of 30 semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of full‑time experience.
Applicants using educational units to qualify must provide proof by the closing deadline.
All candidates must possess knowledge of supervision principles; park policies and procedures; natural resources conservation, park management and general law enforcement; first aid and safety; interpretive program materials; public relations practices; and state and County laws and ordinances.
Ability to supervise and evaluate subordinates; read, interpret and enforce laws and regulations in accordance with County policy; maintain records and prepare clear, complete, and concise reports; speak and write effectively; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and employees.
Licenses & Certifications
Valid California driver’s license.
First Aid and CPR/AED certifications.
Within six months of employment, must obtain Basic Water Rescue certification (American Red Cross or YMCA) and Aquatic Facility Operator Certification (AFO); completion of PC 832 required.
Physical Requirements Independent mobility to stand and move for up to eight hours daily; lift, carry, push or pull equipment for tasks such as habitat restoration, fence repairs and debris removal.
Frequent exposure to inclement weather, extreme heat (up to 120 °F), and wildlife; may encounter plants, animals or animal odors.
